Freemax Marvos S 80W Pod Mod Kit Review / Their 1st Amazing Side By Side Pod Mod

Richard Winter Mods 2 Comments

The Marvos S 80W Pod Mod kit is the third release in the Marvos range of devices emerging from Freemax. Unlike the Marvos T 80W and the Marvos 60W Pod Mod, both of which we’ve recently reviewed, the Marvos S is Freemax’s first Side By Side (SBS) Pod Mod.

Freemax Marvos Range

Freemax are still using the same Marvos pod across all three of their devices, which include the same range of Mesh coils that really do give outstanding performance. I’m so pleased to see that Freemax are continuing using this pod as it can be interchanged between the three Marvos range of devices.

Freemax Marvos S Kit View

The Marvos S Mod kit is a 5W-80W Side by Side mod that incorporates a standard 510 connector making this a true mod therefore can accept any standard 510 threaded tank, RTA or RBA. Included in the kit is a threaded 510 adaptor of which the Marvos pod fits in to…Definitely the best of both worlds!

It’s powered by an external 18650 battery with the battery cap running alongside the pod/tank hence the term Side By Side (SBS). A 2A Type-C USB fast charging port is housed below the fire button and the user interface (UI) is a 0.96inch TFT colored display screen positioned on one side of the Marvos S mod just above the +/- rocker button.

Control of the Marvos S is carried out by the upgraded FM Chip 2.0, providing accurate power levels, ultra -fast 0.001s firing speed and the usual host of safety features. Its operating modes are the same as the Marvos 60W having “Power”, “Smart” and “Bypass” modes and also has 5 selectable color screen options.

The Marvos pod has an e-liquid capacity of 4.5ml (2ml EU variant), is re-fillable via the silicone rubber bottom fill port and accepts the MS Mesh series of push fit coils. These coils utilize Freemax’s FM COILTECH 4.0 (Tea Fibre Cotton Formula and Military Grade SS904L Mesh) so the flavor and performance is really impressive.

Airflow control is provided by twin Cyclops slots that are fully adjustable on the 510 threaded adaptor. This adaptor screws into the Marvos S mod and the Marvos pod slots into the 510 adaptor and is held in place by 4 strong magnets. The Marvos pod is transparent and also has a removable 810 drip tip.

Overall, the Marvos S is one very compact, very stylish and very impressive pod mod kit. I can honestly say I find this kit so tactile with its leather wrap around inlay, it really does feel and look so good. It’s not often I’m drawn to a device but I really do find it hard to put this one down.

I would like to thank the guys and girls (Tina) at Freemax for sending me the Freemax Marvos S 80W pod mod kit to review. As always this review is completely unbiased and is my honest opinion based on my findings.

Freemax Marvos S 80W Mod Design and Appearance

The dimensions of the Marvos S 80W Pod Mod kit are 26mm depth x 51.7mm width x 110.2mm tall and weighs in at 159.42g. The shape of the Marvos S mod has no square cut edges, instead it’s rectangular with its two ends semi-circular (oval) making this extremely tactile and very comfortable to hold.

An external 18650 battery powers the mod with the battery configuration orientated as a Side By Side (SBS) design with a protruding top battery cap.

This SBS design means the battery, together with the battery cap, run alongside the pod/tank allowing the overall mod to be extremely compact. The only downside of this design is the battery cap sits proud of the Marvos S mod body with its position being next to the pod/tank. This limits the available diameter of tank that can be fitted. Anything larger than a 26mm diameter tank will not be able to be fitted to the Marvos S.

The Marvos S mod is constructed out of Zinc-Alloy and Stainless Steel with a colored faux leather wrap inlay around the battery compartment. The available color options are Silver/Grey, Gunmetal/Red, Gunmetal/Yellow, Black/Black and Black/Blue.

Each of the 5 color options (grey, red, yellow, black and blue) describes the colors available on the faux leather inlay, while the 3 colors (silver, gunmetal and black) depict the coloring of the zinc alloy body. The one I received from Freemax and shown in the photos is the Gunmetal/Yellow variant.

Marvos S 510 Top View

At the top of the Marvos S 80W mod is the 510 threaded connector plate with the gold plated spring loaded center pin. This 510 plate is very slightly raised to stop any attached tank/RTA/RBA scratching the zinc alloy frame when it’s screwed in.

Marvos S 510 and Battery View

Alongside this connector is the raised Stainless Steel 18650 knurled battery cap. Unscrewing this cap gains access to the battery housing. Once the battery cap is removed, you will see the red positive + sign on the inside of the battery chamber. Insertion of the 18650 battery is positive end into the battery chamber. The battery cap is then screwed on making contact with the negative end of the battery. This makes the complete circuit and the mod is ready for use.

On the side (opposite to the battery) of the Marvos S is the fairly large oval fire button positioned towards the top of the mod. On the same side towards the bottom of the mod is the Type-C USB fast charging port specified as 5V/2A.

The front of the Marvos S has the +/- control oval shaped rocker button towards the bottom of the mod. Above this button is the 0.96inch TFT colored display screen. Both the fire button and the +/- rocker button are finished in a black nickel type reflective coating and have a very positive “click” feel to them. There is NO button rattle at all.

Marvos S Full View

All of the user information is clearly visible on the display, even in pretty bright sunlight. The use of the different colors to highlight each of the individual parameters is very effective and makes reading them a lot easier. Equally changing the screen colors between the 5 available color options is a nice touch too.

The information on the display includes the following:

  • Power / Smart / Bypass
  • Battery level indicator
  • Wattage / Voltage levels
  • Lock / Unlock
  • A smaller Wattage/Voltage reading (opposite to what’s been selected)
  • Coil resistance reading
  • Puff counter
  • Vaping time reading
  • Theme: 5 color display options
Marvos S Bottom View

Branding is limited to the words “Marvos S” branded into the faux leather on the front side of the mod and the words “FreeMax” printed in small white lettering on the base of the mod.

The bottom of the device has 3 reasonably sized battery venting holes just in case there are any issues with the battery overheating or venting.

The Smart FM 2.0 Chipset in the Marvos S 80W mod provides the necessary protection and will display these notifications on the 0.96inch TFT display screen:

  • Time Out (10s)
  • No Atomizer (no resistance detected)
  • High Temperature Protection
  • Low Battery
  • Atomizer Short

Overall, I’m really impressed with the design and appearance of the Marvos S 80W mod, the build quality looks and feels really impressive. It’s simple and straightforward to use and it really is compact. The aesthetics of it are just PERFECT.

Freemax Marvos Pod Design and Appearance

As the pod is identical to both the Marvos 60W and Marvos T 80W we reviewed recently, we have used very similar wording to that found in those reviews. The major difference being the Marvos pod doesn’t fit directly to the Marvos S body because it’s a 510 threaded mod, it utilizes the 510 adaptor.

Freemax Marvos Pod View 1
Freemax Marvos Pod View 2

The Marvos pod is circular in shape, has an e-liquid capacity of 4.5ml (2ml EU variant) and is very lightly tinted black semi-opaque in color. The tint is pretty much transparent so the e-liquid is clearly visible through it.

Manufactured out of PCTG material, it’s specifically designed for DTL vaping with increased airflow and a V-shaped design to help prevent spitback. The mouthpiece having a removable wide bore 810 drip tip, matches that of the pod housing. The drip tip incorporates 2 silicone O-Rings that do a very good job of securing the mouthpiece into the pod.

On the underside of the pod are 4 strong magnets that locate and fix into the 510 adaptor. The fill port is bottom filling and is located behind a black silicone rubber flap that sits flush with the bottom of the pod.

Freemax Marvos Pod View 3
Freemax Marvos Pod View 4

Written on the flap are the words “FreeMax” with a little arrow below the “X” that donates where the silicone flap is to be gently lifted to gain access to the fill port. There is a small fingernail slot below the arrow to aid removal.

When the fill port flap is open, it’s held in place so won’t get misplaced. The fill opening is oval in shape and is pretty small. Filling with needle tip e-liquid bottles isn’t a problem but the shorter stubbier bottle tips are a little tricky. Filling slowly didn’t cause me a problem.

The pod accepts the MS range of push fit replaceable coils and are simply pushed into place into the circular opening from the bottom of the pod. The 3 O-Rings on the coil, 2 at the top and 1 at the bottom of the coil do a good job of sealing the coil in place to prevent e-liquid seepage.

Marvos Pod in 510 Adaptor

Inserting the pod is straight-forward, simply place the pod into the 510 adaptor and it will be locked and held into place by the magnets. Removing the pod is carried out by simply pulling the pod body up and away from the 510 connector.

When the pod is attached to the Marvos S 80W mod, via the 510 adaptor of course, if the pod mod is set to Smart mode, the coil will be automatically recognized and the optimum wattage will be set on the device for that particular coil.

510 Adaptor

In order for the Marvos pod to be fitted to the Marvos S mod, the supplied 510 adaptor will need to be fitted between the Marvos S mod and the Marvos pod first.

Marvos Pod and 510 Adaptor

Marvos Pod and 510 View 2

This 510 adaptor is screwed into the Marvos S mod making contact with the center pin on the mod. Inside the 510 adaptor is a center plate with a spring loaded gold plated center pin below the plate. The pod is then fitted inside the outer housing of the 510 adaptor and is held in place by the 4 strong magnets on the bottom of the pod.

The coil in the pod makes contact with the gold plated spring loaded pin in the 510 adaptor. Simple, ingenious and MARVelOus.

Airflow control is carried out by rotating the knurled ring which opens and closes the two fully adjustable airflow rectangular slots. The resistance of the airflow control ring is very positive so there is no fear of it moving accidentally. The ring has no end stops so will continue to rotate if required.

Freemax Marvos S 80W Pod Mod Functionality

The Marvos S 80W pod mod uses a 0.96inch colored display to show all of the set parameters and changes to these are carried out by sequential presses of the fire button and the +/- buttons as follows:

  • Fire button pressed 5 times turns the device on or off
  • Fire button pressed 3 times will switch between Power, Smart and Bypass modes
  • + button will increment the wattage in 1W steps
  • – button will decrease the wattage in 1W steps
  • Fire button and – button will switch between the 5 color themes
  • Fire button and + button will reset the Puff counter
  • +and- buttons together will Lock/Unlock the device
  • Fire button and +/- buttons for 3 seconds will Factory Reset

Included on the 0.96inch colored display is all of the read-out information as follows:

Marvos S Display Screen
  • Power / Smart / Bypass
  • Battery level indicator
  • Wattage / Voltage levels
  • Lock / Unlock
  • A smaller Wattage/Voltage reading (opposite to what’s been selected)
  • Coil resistance reading
  • Puff counter
  • Vaping time reading
  • Theme: 5 color display options

Also the safety read-outs for the protection of the Marvos S 80W are:

  • Time Out (10s)
  • No Atomizer (no resistance detected)
  • High Temperature Protection
  • Low Battery
  • Atomizer Short

To give a brief overview of the “Smart” modes and what they do and mean, we’ve included a brief description

Smart Mode: Power

Standard wattage mode. Wattage is variable between 5W through to 80W and adjusted by the + or – rocker button. Pressing the button each time will increment or decrease the wattage in 1W steps. Holding the + or – button down will cycle through the wattage quicker.

Smart Mode: Smart

Automatic Coil Recognition. Automatically detects the type of coil fitted in the pod and selects the optimum wattage for that coil. Adjustment of the wattage is still possible by the +/- buttons if you want to fine tune your vape experience.

Smart Mode: Bypass

Switching to this mode will basically mimic a mechanical mod but maintains all the safety parameters. It uses the available battery power (voltage) and applies that to the coil. As the battery voltage reduces so will the wattage and the vape intensity will reduce.

The display will indicate the applied battery voltage where the wattage is normally shown. Underneath that, next to the coil reading is the wattage you will be vaping at.

Color Theme

Pressing the fire button and – button together for one second will alter the color of the display. 5 color options are available, these being Blue, Orange, Green, Red and White.

Switching between the different modes is very straight-forward and the display with its different color modes is very crisp and clear. The brightness of the display is quite bright so will be no trouble seeing it in direct sunlight.

In-activity of any button presses after a period of 1 minute will put the display into standby mode (blank).

Freemax Marvos S 80W Kit Performance

Freemax Marvos Coils

Composition of both coils are; SS904L Mesh and Tea Fiber Cotton and use the FM Coiltech 4.0 technology. There are 4 different coils available in the MS Mesh range but the two included in the kit are:

MS Mesh 0.15 ohm Coil

Freemax specify the optimum range of this coil is 60W-80W. When operated in Smart mode, the pod mod will auto recognize the coil and set the wattage to 50W.

MS Mesh 0.25 ohm Coil

Freemax specify the optimum range of this coil is 40W-60W. When operated in Smart mode, the pod mod will auto recognize the coil and set the wattage to 50W.

Coil/Performance Summary

I’ve said it before and I will say it again! The performance and flavor from these two coils really is very impressive. Not just these but all the coil types I’ve tried on various Freemax tanks and pods really are some of the best I’ve used.

I prefer to vape at a lower wattage giving me a longer less intense draw and both these coils worked perfectly. Increasing the wattage to the optimum, even maximum recommended and beyond worked faultlessly.

I’ve cycled different ratio e-liquids through the pod, even high VG and both coils coped really well. Being high power DTL coils, I found liquids over 6mg strength nicotine was a little to harsh for me.

Coil life is equally as impressive. I’ve been switching between the two supplied coils over the last couple of weeks and both coils are still producing amazing flavor.

One very minor niggle we observed was while in “Smart” mode. The auto coil recognition didn’t always detect the correct coil resistance. I would say approximately 1 in 10 times of the pod being inserted, the displayed resistance was incorrect and the optimum set wattage was different.

Freemax Marvos S 80W Battery Performance

The Marvos S 80W is powered by an external single 18650 battery which did last for approximately 6hrs of vaping while using the Smart mode setting (optimum wattage) on the 0.15 ohm coil before I had to re-charge. Obviously this is subjective and depends on your vaping style, the coil type you’re using, the capacity of your battery and the wattage you’ve selected.

When vaping over 60W, I would recommend using a high capacity battery with at least a 25A CDR value, if not err on the side of caution and use 30A CDR value battery.

Reducing the wattage while using the 0.25 ohm coil to 40W, with average vaping, gave me approximately 8hrs of vaping before the battery cut out.

Good to see that Freemax have again included the option of “Pass-Through”, meaning that you can still vape the Marvos S 80W pod mod while it’s being charged.

Please use our Battery Amp Draw/Drain Calculator to determine the correct value CDR value battery you should use for the wattage you plan to vape at.

How do I Fill the Freemax Marvos Pod?

Filling the Marvos Pod

Simply grasp the pod body, NOT the mouthpiece and pull upwards away from the 510 adaptor. Because the pod is a very secure fit, slightly prize the pod to one side releasing one of the magnets then pull the pod out.

Once removed, you will see the little black silicone rubber flap on the side of the pod, gently pull this flap open from the end with the little arrow on it and the fingernail slot.

Place your e-liquid bottle tip into this opening and squeeze the bottle until the pod is nearly full.

Once complete, replace the black silicone rubber flap and re-insert the pod back into the 510 adaptor.

Quick Tip: If you are filling the pod for the first time, drip a few drops of e liquid onto the wick of the coil first. Push the coil into the pod then fill the pod and leave to stand for approx. 10-15 minutes before you start to vape. This will help saturate the wick fully in e-liquid and help prolong the life of your coil.

How do I Change the Coil in the Freemax Marvos Pod?

Grasp the pod body and pull away from the 510 adaptor.

Marvos Pod Coil In
Marvos Pod Coil Out

Because the coils are a push fit type, simply pull the old coil out from the bottom of the pod and replace with a new one.

Do note that if the pod has e-liquid in it while your remove the coil, e-liquid will spill from the pod. The best method to avoid this or to keep e-liquid spillage to a minimum is to hold the pod upside down (drip tip pointing downwards), place your finger tightly over the opening of the drip tip and then remove the coil.

Replace with a new coil while still holding your finger over the drip tip. Turn the pod the right way up and take your finger off the drip tip.

As always, when replacing a new coil, follow the procedure as outlined in the quick tip above under ‘filling’.

How do I Charge the Freemax Marvos S 80W Mod?

Charging the Marvos S Mod

As with most external battery mods, there are 2 ways which you can charge the battery. Either in the mod itself or using an external charger (recommended).

If you do wish to charge your battery in the mod, the Freemax Marvos S 80W mod has a side located Type-C USB charging port.

A Type-C USB charging cable comes supplied with the kit. Simply connect the cable into the USB port on the Marvos S mod and the other end into a suitable USB power source. The specified charging circuit of the Marvos S is 5V/2A.

The battery icon will be displayed on the screen with the battery bars cycling to depict it’s charging. Obviously the number of cycling bars indicates the status of charge.

After approximately 2 minutes the display will dim slightly. Strangely enough, after a further 5 minutes the display goes black. At this point you would think that the battery has completed its charge cycle. Pressing either the + or – button brings up the display again showing the battery icon with the bars still cycling.

The only way to tell when it’s completely charged is to press one of the + or – buttons and check to see that the battery icon and cycling bars remain static. We did observe this same issue on the Marvos 60W pod mod.

I would of preferred to see the display remain in its dim state still showing the cycling battery icon until the charge cycle was completed. This is only a very minor issue for me as I really do always charge my batteries externally.

Charging time from full discharge to fully charged will take approximately 2 hours when using a 5V/2A source. This will vary depending on the capacity of the battery you’re using.

As the Marvos S 80W does have pass-through, you can vape while it’s on charge.

Always observe safe charging practices i.e. always charge on a non-flammable surface and NEVER leave your device unattended whilst charging.

If you prefer to charge your battery externally and I really would recommend doing this, please see our guide on the Best 18650 Battery Chargers.

Freemax Marvos S 80W Pod Mod Kit Price

At the time of writing, the Freemax Marvos S 80W Pod Mod kit is on pre-order so the cost is to be determined.

I would expect it to be around the £40/$50+ mark for the complete kit. I really love the aesthetics and the performance of the Marvos S 80W pod mod kit, the build quality is very good. And as always the flavor from the coils really is impressive.

Once the Marvos S 80W kit is freely available, we will update and include some buy links.

Having used the Freemax Marvos S 80W pod mod kit for a couple of weeks now, I really do like it…I like it an awful lot. I can honestly say I will be purchasing the entire color range as I absolutely LOVE the look and feel of the Marvos S kit.

The flavor and vapor from the included coils really is outstanding and the coil life is really good. The design and build quality is very good, the operation is straight-forward and simple to use and the colored display shows everything you need to know, even in direct sunlight.

Definitely a bonus for me is the 510 adaptor which means I can use the Marvos pod in the other two Marvos devices (60W and T 80W) and any tank or RTA or RBA on the Marvos S 80W mod. Also being an external 18650 battery device means in theory it will last ages. Not only that, it’s really compact and it looks so god damm good!

I would certainly recommend this to a new or experienced vaper alike. Do note, this is a DTL kit so wont suit those folk that prefer MTL vaping.

Freemax have again produced another winner with their first Side by Side mod and the included 510 adaptor makes the kit so versatile.
