Innokin Kroma Nova Vape Review | 3000mAh Battery, 60W Power and New PZP Coils

Welcome to our review on the latest offering to come out of the Innokin camp, their Kroma Nova. We’ve being using 2 of these pod devices for a few weeks now and to say we’re impressed is an understatement.

Innokin continue with the Kroma name and from a distance it’s not too dissimilar from their earlier Kroma-Z pod kit. Take a closer look and the differences speak for themselves. The Kroma Nova comes with a new updated OLED interface, a new range of PZP (plug & play) coils have been introduced and a slide to open top fill design pod.

We will highlight the main features after giving a quick overview first and then jump into the main body of the review.

Overview of the Kroma Nova

The Kroma Nova vape pod kit boasts a large capacity 3000mAh internal battery which is rechargeable via the 1.7A Type-C USB port. Firing up to 60W, it caters for Mouth-To Lung (MTL), Restricted-Direct-To-Lung (RDL) and Direct-To-Lung (DTL) vaping styles from the new range of PZP coils, two of which (0.4 ohm and 1.0 ohm) are included in the kit.

Firing the Kroma Nova is push button controlled by the trademark elongated fire bar that also incorporates the new OLED display interface and the + and – wattage adjustment buttons. This display has a modern and interesting approach with a simple layout but visually very effective.

Functionality is fairly straightforward and facilitates “Smart” coil detect, variable screen and vape cutoff settings, puff counter, lock function and the normal vape time, voltage and coil resistance information. A variable airflow slider lever gives further control to fine tune your vaping draw.

The pod also takes on a face-lift with a slide to open top fill, removable MTL and DTL mouthpieces supplied with the kit, the new PZP coils and an e-liquid capacity of 3ml (2ml TPD).

Kroma Nova Packaging

As is now standard across all Innokin devices, they continue to use 100% recyclable buff cardboard for all their packaging. This also includes the spares which are housed in paper sachets.

The packaging box is a folded lift to open lid with a cardboard insert housing the Kroma Nova. Beneath the cardboard insert are two further boxes that contain the manuals and charging cable in one box and the spares in the other box.

All the outer surfaces of the box are plain buff colored with the exception of the colored sticker that wraps around half the box to form a seal. This sticker shows the Kroma Nova kit in the color you’ve chosen on the front of the box. The same color wrapped around one side shows the color name and also around the back which has a bar code with the authentication scratch and verify label.

The front of the packaging includes the main features; “New PZP Coil”, “MTL / RDL”, “Adjustable Airflow”, “6W – 60W Adjustable Wattage” and “Easy Sliding Top Fill” together with the standard nicotine warning. The reverse side of the packaging includes the package contents, the manufacturer’s details and the relevant safety and nicotine warnings.

Overall size and dimensions of the packaging are 155mm high x 95mm wide x 52mm deep. As you can see from the photos the two colors we received for the purpose of our review are Azure Blue and Snowflake White.

Preparing to Use the Kroma Nova

Remove the protective film from the Fire Bar on the Kroma Nova

Once you remove the Kroma Nova from the inner cardboard tray, remove the transparent film sticker that’s covering the long fire button bar.

Unlatch the pod from the Kroma Nova body and remove the yellow protection sticker that’s placed across the bottom of the pre-installed 1.0 ohm coil.

Remove the PZP coil from the Kroma Nova Pod to Prime the Coil

The Kroma Nova pod comes pre-installed with the PZP 1.0 ohm coil. Gently pull the coil out from the pod base and prime the coil by dripping a few drops of e-liquid into the wicking ports of the coil. Note: Priming is only needed when you first use a new coil. Reinsert the coil and then proceed to fill the pod with your e-liquid.

It’s a top fill slide to open system and once open place the tip of your e-liquid bottle into the oval shaped filling port. When filled, close the sliding top cap and reinsert the pod into the Kroma Nova. I recommend not vaping after first filling but leaving it to stand for 10-15 minutes for the e-liquid to saturate the wick/coil.

Switch the Kroma Nova on by pressing the fire bar 3 times in quick succession. Set the wattage to its lowest value and take a few draws then gradually increase the wattage taking further draws until you reach your desired setting.

The Innokin Kroma Nova is a pod device with an internal 3000mAh capacity battery and variable wattage control between 6W to 60W (adjustable in 0.5/1.0 watt steps). It also boasts “Smart” coil detect so it automatically detects the coil resistance and sets the recommended starting wattage level. This can be easily overridden if like me you prefer to select your own wattage level.

A newly designed user interface in the form of a colored 0.86inch OLED display has a modern look and layout that uses back highlighted sections and icons for the different protections. It’s embedded into the long black opaque fire bar with two small + and – control buttons positioned towards the bottom of the fire bar.

Underneath this fire bar on the front bottom edge is the Type-C USB charging port, specified as 5V/1.7A. Charging is carried out using the supplied USB-C cable and will fully charge the Kroma Nova in approximately 2 hours. It does have “pass-through” so you are able to vape while it’s being charged.

On the reverse side of the Kroma Nova, just above the leather hide, is a variable slider that controls the airflow allowing for MTL, RDL and DTL draws depending on the resistance of the coil fitted in the pod. This variable slider adjusts the airflow through 2 triangular air intake ports on each side of the Kroma Nova body. The slider has a very positive feel to it and won’t inadvertently move on its own.

Made out of Magnesium Alloy with a stitched leather wrap hide around the back and sides, its overall dimensions, including the pod measure 116.33mm high, 39.15mm wide and 30.76mm deep with a total weight of 145 grams.

The base of the Kroma Nova is completely flat so there are no problems with it being stood upright. Two countersunk torx screws look like they hold the base section in place but I won’t try to undo in case all the insides fall out and I can’t get it back together again. “UKCA”, “CE” and “Bin” logos are screen printed onto the base, together with “3000mAh” and “11.1Wh”.

At the top of the Kroma Nova is the pod recess which has a recessed flat plate with 2 circular magnets and a circular cutout. Within this cutout are the two sunken gold plated spring loaded coil contact pins. The raised back section of the pod recess has an indented panel which locates with the tag on the pod to help hold the pod securely in place when fitted.

Innokin’s branding is discrete with their name “INNOKIN” indented into the Magnesium Alloy frame on one side and “Kroma Nova” on the other side.

The leather wrap around hide on the back spine has “NOVA” embossed into the smooth leather between the two rows of stitching in large lettering. It’s not in your face as the color and texture blends in with the rest of the leather hide.

Accessing the available menus and making any adjustments is achieved by using a combination of the fire bar and the + / – buttons. More detail of the menus are described later on in the Functionality section.

The colored OLED display screen is clear, crisp and bright and shows the numerical wattage level, coil resistance, vape duration, lock/unlock and the status of the battery.

A secondary sub screen also shows the output voltage of the battery and a puff counter. Screen timeout and vape cut-off can also be adjusted to suit your own preference.

With regards to safety features, the Kroma Nova provides the following prompts such as:

  • Vape Cut-Off: 3-18 seconds timeout
  • Low Battery Voltage (3.3V)
  • No Coil/Pod Detected
  • High Resistance
  • Low Resistance
  • Short Circuit
  • High Temperature warning

Overall I’m really impressed with the design and appearance of the Kroma Nova. The build quality and aesthetics look really good and it has a robust and quality feel to it. Variable airflow caters for all vaping styles, the internal 3000mAh battery is more than enough for all day vaping and the modern looking OLED display was very effective.

As we’ve highlighted in the What’s in the Box? section of this review, we received the TPD variant of the Kroma Nova so the Pod we have has a 2ml e-liquid capacity. If purchased in any other regions then the kit you’ll receive will come with the 3ml standard Pod.

I was going to complain about the lack of visibility of the e-liquid viewing window which makes it difficult to see how much e-liquid is left in the pod. On closer inspection of the pod I could see a dark silicone rubber bung in the base of the pod that restricts the capacity to 2ml. Unfortunately this also blocks half of the viewing area making it difficult to inspect the remaining e-liquid left in the pod.

The only way I found was to tilt the Kroma Nova on its front side edge and look at the pod against a backlight. Alternatively, if 3ml pods are sold separately I would definitely buy a couple of these to replace the TPD version. Dare I say yet another example of the mindless 2ml TPD restriction limit!

The Innokin Kroma Nova comes supplied with a removable 510 MTL drip tip and also a 510 wider bore drip tip for RDL and DTL vaping styles. It has a 2ml e-liquid capacity (3ml standard), with a top filling slide to open/close top section so the pod can be filled without removing it from the Kroma Nova body/battery.

Innokin PZP 1.0 ohm and 0.4 ohm coils

Innokin have introduced a new range of PZP Mesh push fit coils for this pod, two of which are included in the kit:

  • PZP 0.4 ohm coil: 30W-40W (DTL/RDL) Included in kit
  • PZP 0.6 ohm coil: 18W-24W (MTL/RDL)
  • PZP 1.0 ohm coil: 9W-13W (MTL) Included in kit
  • PZP 1.2 ohm coil: 10W-13W (MTL)

These new PZP coils are Kanthal A1 Mesh with 2 clear O-rings, 1 at the top of the coil that seals against the top chimney inside the pod and 1 at the base opening of the pod.

As a little spoiler, we will be reviewing the new Innokin Zyon compact pod mod in the next week or so. This kit includes the new PZP 0.6 ohm and 1.2 ohm coils so between the two kits we would have tried the whole PZP platform range.

The Kroma Nova Pod is manufactured out of dark PCTG material with a semi-opaque e-liquid chamber. It can only be fitted one way around because of its shape and it measures 35mm high including the drip tip, 29.7mm wide and 35.7mm deep.

At the top of the Kroma Nova pod is a small raised arrow on the slide to open top section showing the direction of travel to gain access to the filling port (front to back). When opened, the oval opening measures 11mm by 6mm and is surrounded with a raised rubber outer seal and a covered inner rubber membrane.

Filling with e-liquid is carried out by passing your bottle tip nozzle through the rubber membrane. Once filled, simply close the sliding top section.

Both the included drip tips have double O-rings ensuring a tight seal and because they’re 510 you can if needed use any standard 510 mouthpiece.

At the base of the Kroma Nova Pod are 2 large circular magnets and a circular hole in the base that accepts the PZP push fit coils. There is also a raised tag on the outside edge of the pod that when fitted aligns with the indent in the pod recess. The combinations of the 2 magnets and the raised tag hold the pod securely in place.

Branding is very discrete and limited to the words “Innokin” and “Kroma Nova” around the side edge of the pod that’s concealed when the pod is fitted.

I think the Kroma Nova is a great pod and works really well. The sliding top cap when filling is easy and the PZP coils perform really well. My only criticism is the restriction of the e-liquid viewing window in the 2ml version.

Innokin Kroma Nova Functionality

The Innokin Kroma Nova is a simple and straightforward to use pod device with variable wattage, “Smart” coil detection and variable airflow control. It incorporates a new stylish screen layout with a 0.86inch display that’s integrated into the long fire bar with two small + and – control buttons that sit below the display.

Included on the display screen are the main operating parameters as detailed below, with an additional sub menu that allows you to adjust the vape cut-off, screen timeout and monitor your puff count. The display is clear but the readout information with the exception of the wattage value is fairly small.

Note: When you press the fire bar, the coil resistance reading switches to a vape time reading and remains visible for 2 seconds after the fire bar is released, at which point it reverts back to the coil resistance reading.

Pressing both the fire bar and + button together for 3 seconds will bring up the secondary screen showing the following information:

  • Coil Resistance
  • Battery Output Voltage
  • Puff Counter

Pressing both the + and – buttons together for 3 seconds will bring up the sub menu where you can then adjust the vape “Cut-Off” and “Screen” timeout:

  • Cut-Off: 3 – 18 seconds (default 10 seconds)
  • Screen: 5 – 180 seconds (default 10 seconds)

Quick Start Operation

  • Fire bar pressed 3 times turns the device on or off
  • Fire bar and + button shows battery charge, coil resistance and puff counter
  • Press the + or – button till display flashes, then press again to alter the wattage
  • Fire bar and – button to lock/unlock the device (fire bar still fires)
  • + and – buttons together will enter the sub menu options

Smart Coil Detect

Smart coil detect is a function that takes the worry out of knowing what the correct wattage is for any particular resistance of coil. This is a great aid for newish vapers who could inadvertently apply too much power to a coil and burn it out.

The Kroma Nova auto detects the resistance of the coil you’re using and sets the starting wattage for you. This is only a guide and you can decrease or increase the wattage as you see fit as we’ve outlined in the following section.

Starting wattage and recommended power values for each coil type is outlined below:

Increasing/Decreasing the Wattage Level

Pressing the + or – button will initially have no effect in decreasing or increasing the wattage levels. If you want to increase or decrease the power levels, you will first have to hold down either the + or – button until the numerical power level flashes.

Once the display starts to flash, release the button and then press the button again. This will now increment or decrease the wattage value, depending on which button you’re pressing. The wattage will increment in 0.5W steps from 6W–20W then 1W increments from 20W to its maximum of 60W.

The + / – buttons do a round robin so when you reach the maximum value, the next press will take you to the minimum value and vice versa.

Holding either of the + or – buttons down continuously will scroll through the available wattage range a lot quicker until it reaches the minimum or maximum value. It will remain at that value for 1 second then cycle again until you release the button.

Screen Timeout

When selecting this menu, you can specify how long the screen will remain illuminated after any button press before it goes blank. Press and hold the + / – buttons for 3 seconds. The sub menu will appear then scroll down to the “Screen” prompt and press the fire bar. Now use the + / – buttons to alter the value.

The default setting is 10 seconds, but you can select a value from 5 seconds – 180 seconds.

Cut-Off is a safety feature to prevent prolonged firing of the device when the fire bar is held on (pressed). When the time is reached as specified in the CUTOFF menu, the display will indicated “CUTOFF” and will stop firing.

To access this menu, press and hold the + / – buttons for 3 seconds. The sub menu will appear then scroll down to the “CUTOFF” prompt and press the fire bar. Now use the + / – buttons to alter the value.

The default setting for this is 10 seconds, but you can select any value from 3 seconds to 18 seconds.

The Kroma Nova has adjustable airflow control via a single slider lever on the reverse side of the casing. When looking at the back of the Nova body, moving the airflow lever to the left will decrease the airflow and restrict the draw, sliding it to the right will increase the airflow and provide an airy draw.

MTL, RDL and DTL vaping styles can be achieved by selecting the appropriate resistance coil and adjusting the airflow position as required.

Safety Protections

The following safety protections are provided by the Kroma Nova and will display the relevant prompts via the OLED display:

  • Low Voltage – Battery will need recharging
  • No Load / High Resistance
  • Low Resistance
  • Short Circuit
  • Auto Shut Off (Cut-Out)
  • Temperature Overheat

Innokin Kroma Nova Performance

Two PZP coils are supplied with the kit (0.4 ohm and 1.0 ohm) and both are Kanthal A1 mesh with cotton wick. The Kroma Nova only operates in variable wattage mode but does have “Smart” coil detect.

While the “Smart” coil detect is always a handy feature if you’re not sure what wattage value to set for each coil, I always bed my new coils in initially below the minimum recommended wattage level so not to stress the coils too quickly.

I also find with these coils they perform very well even below the minimum wattage specified for each coil type.

Innokin recommend using a 50/50 ratio e-liquid when using the 1.0 ohm coil and a 70VG/30PG ratio for the 0.4 ohm coil. I have tried both ratios through both coil types with no signs of leaking or dry hits.

Both of the PZP coils have the coil resistance and the minimum and maximum recommended wattage range stamped on the coil casing. I would never exceed the maximum wattage rating for the coil and more often than not I vape under the minimum recommended for the coil.

Innokin specify the wattage range for this coil is between 9W-13W. Smart coil detect automatically sets the starting wattage to 12W.

After priming and slowly bedding in the coil, I found the flavor and vapor came through straight away at 6W, even though it was a slow ramp-up time. Incrementing the wattage up to 9W increased the speed of draw producing more flavor and much denser vapor.

Increasing the wattage to 12W still produced the same great flavor but surprisingly the vapor produced was very dense. Adjusting the airflow to fully open gave a nice RDL draw and closing the airflow produced a tight MTL draw.

Taking the coil to its maximum of 13W and slightly beyond worked well but wasn’t needed as my sweet spot for this coil was around 9W with the airflow either 1/2 open for an airy MTL draw or fully open for a RDL draw.

I’ve cycled around 50ml so far through this coil (lots of refills….Damm TPD) and the flavor is still coming through very well.

PZP 0.4 Ohm Coil

Innokin specify the wattage range for this coil is between 30W-40W. Smart coil detect automatically sets the starting wattage to 30W.

Once primed and bedded in, the flavor and vapor marginally appeared around 9W. Increasing the wattage to 15W started to bring out the flavor of my e-liquid while producing a reasonable amount of vapor from a 4 second draw.

Increasing the wattage to 20W with the airflow open brought the flavor out nicely with dense vapor from only a 2 second draw. Taking the wattage up to 25W and then to 30W increased the vapor and speed of draw at each level.

The “Smart” coil detect of 30W was about right for this coil, although I found setting it to 25W with the airflow fully open seemed to give me the best results for my longer draw style. Flavor was really good and again the vapor was very dense.

40W gave a very intense, short draw and filled the room with vapor. A bit too powerful for me but the coil kept up at this power really well with no dry hits. Having the airflow set to anything other than fully open wasn’t doing it for me as I prefer an unrestricted DTL draw.

I’ve been vaping with this coil for the last 2.5 weeks with the wattage set between 22W-25W and I really can’t fault it. There is no sign of flavor drop off at all.

Any Leaks?

Throughout my time using the Kroma Nova there was no evidence of any leaks, just slight condensation around the base of the coil when using either of the supplied coils. Obviously as the coils get older leaking can start to occur and is a good gauge that it’s time to replace the coil.

Both the 0.4 ohm and 1.0 ohm PZP coils are very impressive. Flavor and vapor from them is really good. The choice of coil is slightly dependent on your vaping style although I have to say the wide airflow adjustment caters for all styles.

Longevity of the coils is a little unknown as I’ve only been using the Kroma Nova for a few weeks… but so far I’ve not had to replace the coils yet.

Innokin Kroma Nova Battery Performance

The Kroma Nova is powered by a large internal 3000mAh capacity battery which is going to give a long vaping time between charges. It does come with a nominal charge but I would recommend fully charging the battery first before you use it. Our How to Charge section covers what you can expect when charging the Kroma Nova.

Battery performance is always subjective and depends on the power (wattage) you vape at, the type (resistance) of coil you’re using and your vaping style. The times recorded below are only a guide as my vaping style may differ from your own.

On average I was achieving an impressive 2 days of vaping before the battery cut-out while using the 1.0 ohm coil at 9W. My puff count recorded on the display each time ranged between 830 and 1024 puffs. This time reduced to just about a day when using the 0.4 ohm coil at 25W with a puff count averaging 480.

The Kroma Nova indicates the status of the remaining battery charge on the OLED display with a color changing battery icon and a percentage value. While this icon changes color from green to orange then red, it is quite difficult to see as it reduces in charge.

Once the battery is depleted of its charge (Low Voltage Cut-Off), the OLED display will show a large battery icon with 0% and a “LOW VOLT” prompt beneath. Continuing to vape in this condition will switch the device off.

One point worth mentioning, the intensity of the draw remains the same throughout the discharge cycle of the battery. It doesn’t diminish as the battery drains.

How do I Fill the Kroma Nova Pod?

The Kroma Nova pod is a top filling slide to open mechanism. It’s really easy to fill and can be done with the pod connected to the Kroma Nova or removed if you prefer.

An embossed arrow on the top of the pod in front of the mouthpiece shows you which direction the top section of the pod slides to gain access to the filling port. Slide the top cap back and you will see the large oval (11mm) opening that’s surrounded with a rubber seal and covered with a black rubber membrane.

Pass the tip of your e-liquid bottle through the opening of the silicone rubber membrane and fill the Kroma Nova pod with your e-liquid. Once filled, remove the e-liquid bottle from the filling port and slide the top cap back into position ensuring it clicks into place.

The pod only has a small e-liquid viewing window and the tint is quite dark which does make it difficult to see how much e-liquid is in the pod. We had the 2ml TPD version so it’s possible the standard 3ml pod may be easier to see.

Quick Tip: If you are using a brand new coil for the first time, remove the coil and drip a few drops of e- liquid onto the wick of the coil first. Push the coil into the base of the pod then fill and leave to stand for approx. 10-15 minutes before you start to vape. This will help saturate the wick fully in e-liquid and help prolong the life of your coil.

How do I Change the Coil in the Kroma Nova Pod?

Remove the Kroma Nova pod by first moving the back of the pod upwards away from the recess. This will initially release the raised tag at the back of the pod so it can then be lifted out of the pod recess.

Before removing the coil, ensure the pod is empty of e-liquid otherwise you will have e-liquid spilling out. You can if needed turn the pod upside down and keep your thumb/finger over the mouthpiece while removing and fitting a new coil as this should keep e-liquid spillage to a minimum.

The new PZP coils are a push fit type so you simply pull the coil out from the bottom of the pod. Before you fit a new one DO ensure you prime the coil first by dripping a few drops of e-liquid into the wicking ports on the coil.

Fit your new coil making sure it clicks into place and then refit your pod into the pod recess.

With any new coil make sure you prime it first and once the pod is filled leave it to stand for 10-15 minutes before you vape so the e-liquid fully saturates the wick. See our guide on Prolonging the Life of your Coil.

How do I Charge the Innokin Kroma Nova?

Because the Kroma Nova has an internal battery, charging is carried out using the supplied USB to Type-C charging cable. Simply connect the cable into the Type-C port on the Kroma Nova body and the other end into a suitable USB power source.

The specified charging circuit of the Kroma Nova is 5V/1.7A. If you’re using a lower current source than 1.7A it will charge at a slower rate.

When the Kroma Nova is first placed on charge the OLED main display illuminates for 3 seconds and then switches to a large green charging icon with a “RECHARGING” prompt beneath the icon. After approximately 10 seconds the display extinguishes and remains blank throughout the charging cycle.

Pressing any button while it’s on charge will bring up the charging screen and show a percentage value of charge but is only visible for a further 10 seconds. Altering the “Screen” timeout, even to 180 seconds doesn’t affect the 10 second charging display.

Charging time takes just over 2 hours to fully charge the battery which considering the large capacity is pretty good. I would have liked to see some indication on the display to say it’s still charging with a different prompt when full charge is achieved. Full charge can only be verified when you press a button and the display indicates 100%.

I did keep an eye on the percentage increase reached while on charge and found the following:

  • 47% after 1 hour
  • 78% after 1.5 hours
  • 97% after 2 hours
  • 100% = 2 hours 7 minutes

The Kroma Nova does have ‘pass-through” functionality so you are able to charge and vape at the same time.

During the charging cycle, the body of the Kroma Nova does get pretty warm to the touch. I would recommend charging this and any other vape mod or pod on a non-flammable surface.

As with any vape device, NEVER leave your mod unattended whilst charging.

Innokin Kroma Nova Vape Kit Price

The Kroma Nova vape kit has only just been released to market and is currently retailing around the $30 / £35 mark, although I have seen a couple of cheaper offers online so it’s worth shopping around.

This is a great performing vape kit, simple enough for new vapers but equally at home with the more experienced vaper too. For me the battery capacity of 3000mAh is a real plus and using the higher resistance coils give a good 2 days of vaping between charges.

Style and performance wise I can’t fault it and expect this to be yet another success for Innokin.

The Innokin Kroma Nova I feel is yet another pod system that’s going to be an instant success. There’s very little I didn’t like about it! The aesthetics work really well and the leather hide adds to the already great finish.

Vape time between charges from the 3000mAh battery with no drop off in performance is really good. 60W of power is more than enough for the new range of PZP push fit coils which produce great flavor and vapor. Combined with the variable airflow, ALL vaping styles can be achieved from a tight MTL through to DTL.

The new stylish OLED display looks modern and details everything you need to know. The top fill slide to open/close is a great feature on the pod and makes filling with e-liquid a breeze.

Apart from my two niggles with the charging display and 2ml pod, these don’t distract from my overall impressive view of the Kroma Nova. It’s not overly complicated and would suit any new vaper but equally an experienced vapor would feel at home with the performance of this kit.

I was expecting good things to come when I started to use and review the Kroma Nova, having previously reviewed Innokin’s Kroma 217 mod and I definitely wasn’t disappointed.
