Welcome to our latest review on a newly released product from MOTI, their MOTI Play Pod Kit. We recently published a news item relating to MOTI’s recent success at the 2022 International Muse Design Awards where they won 3 prestigious awards for 3 of their products. The MOTI Play which we are reviewing here achieved a Silver medal status for its innovative design and superior product concept.
Following MOTI’s recent success, we are pleased to say we were given the opportunity to review all of MOTI’s recent product range so do keep a look out over the next few weeks for our other reviews.
MOTI are no strangers to us as we’ve reviewed several of their products over the last couple of years, mainly in the disposable market, but we’re pleased to see they’ve now implemented more advanced pod systems into their product range.
You will see throughout this review that the MOTI Play, despite being small, packs a punch and incorporates a re-fillable pod with replaceable coils, variable power and airflow control together with a nifty display so you know exactly what’s going on.
Overview of the MOTI Play

The MOTI Play pod kit is a Mouth-To-Lung (MTL) and Restricted-Direct-To-Lung (RDL) pod device, powered by an internal 900mAh capacity battery with a variable power level of 5W to 30W. The different styles of vaping are achieved by the replaceable MOTI Play coils in the pod and the 360o adjustable airflow control dial on the bottom of the MOTI Play body.
Maximum wattage is dependent on the type/resistance of the fitted coil while its optimum wattage level is auto selected using coil detection. This can be over-ridden by the single wattage adjustment button located on the top of the MOTI Play body.
Charging the MOTI Play is carried out via the Type-C USB charging port, specified as 5V/1.0A, on the side edge of the device body.

Two modes of firing the MOTI Play are available; auto-draw or push button firing. The fire button is positioned on the side edge of the MOTI body just above the Type-C charging port.
A 0.96 inch OLED single color display screen on the front face of the MOTI Play is positioned adjacent to the 2ml pod. It clearly highlights all of the parameters needed to observe the control functions including wattage, coil resistance, voltage, puff counter, vape time and battery level.
The 2ml clear transparent pod is top/side fitting into the MOTI Play and secured by bottom and side fitting magnets. Re-filling the pod is carried out via a side fill port on the pod and as already mentioned, accepts the range (0.45 ohm and 1.00 ohm) push fit replaceable coils.
Its mouthpiece is a removable duck-bill type and is a standard 510 fitting so you can use any 510 drip tip if you so desire.
There are 7 different colors in the MOTI Play pod kit range; Pearl White, Cyber Blue, Alloy Black, Mirror Silver, Army Green, Dark Purple and Blush Pink. The two different color variant kits we received were the Cyber Blue and Mirror Silver models which you will see in the photos throughout this review.
The design and aesthetics of both kits we received to review look futuristic yet very elegant, feel robust and are really very compact. Made of zinc alloy, the MOTI Play has a nice quality feel while not being too heavy. The operation and performance really is VERY good.
Carry on reading and see what we thought, exploring the finer detail and look into the workings, functionality and performance of the MOTI Play pod kit. As a little spoiler, I don’t think you will be disappointed, I really liked it.
I would like to thank MOTI for sending me two of the MOTI Play pod kits. As always this review is completely unbiased and is my honest opinion of my findings on these supplied kits. If you click on any of the buy buttons, we may receive a small affiliate commission but at no extra cost to you.

MOTI Play | Design and Appearance
MOTI Play Battery/Body

The MOTI Play device has a very thin and compact sized internal battery (900mAh), variable wattage (5W-30W) and auto draw and fire button activation. It’s also a MTL and RDL vape pod with adjustable airflow, replaceable coils and a re-fillable pod. It’s constructed out of zinc alloy measuring 70mm tall (excluding the removable duckbill mouthpiece), 44mm wide by 12.5mm deep and weighs in at 66.7 grams (76 grams including the pod).

A 0.96 inch OLED single color (white) display is positioned on the front face of the MOTI Play next to the pod providing the following UI indications:
- Fire and Wattage Button Lock
- Battery Status Icon
- Vaping Time
- Wattage (Power Level)
- Coil Resistance
- Voltage Reading
- Puff Counter
The display has quite a lot going on but is clearly visible through the semi-smoked opaque screen cover. The main display parameters are fairly large so are easily viewed but the vaping time reading is a little small. You eagle eyed (young) vapers will have no problem seeing it, but I did have to put my glasses on to read it!

Variable wattage is carried out by a single oval shaped adjustment button, measuring 8mm in length, on the top of the MOTI Play body. Each press of the button increments and increases the wattage in 1W steps. I’ve not seen this action before but it did work effectively. To decrease the wattage level you have to press or hold the adjustment button until it reaches the maximum level then the next press takes you back to the lowest 5W setting.
Maximum wattage is dependent on the type of coil that’s fitted. The MOTI Play will auto recognize the coil and set the optimum wattage for that coil. From there, you can manually adjust the wattage between the minimum and maximum settings specified for each coil:
- 0.45 ohm Coil – 5W to 30W
- 1.0 ohm Coil – 5W to 16W

The MOTI Play is powered by an internal 900mAh capacity battery and is charged via the Type-C USB port on the side of the MOTI Play body, specified as 5V/1.0A. Charging time will take approximately 1 hour to fully charge the device and the status of the charge is displayed on the OLED display (see How do I Charge the MOTI Play) for further clarity.
Pass-through vaping is present so you can vape while it’s being charged but do note this only kicks in once the charge has increased beyond 10%.
Firing the MOTI Play is operated by either drawing on the pod or pressing the very slightly raised rectangular fire button, measuring 8mm in length, positioned on the side edge of the MOTI Play just above the USB port.
The auto draw is responsive and the fire button is instant with no signs of button rattle. When using the auto draw method, the strength of your draw is governed by the position of the red 360o airflow control dial positioned on the bottom of the MOTI Play.

This airflow dial has two different sized cut-outs that when moved align with the open slot in the MOTI Play body. I did find that even with the airflow shut closed, the draw was still quite airy, so I tended to favor the fire button method.
The variable airflow dial is a great addition and for me certainly came into its own when playing around with different settings while using the fire button to vape.
Two different styles of vaping can be achieved by using either of the two different coils available. The 1.0 ohm coil is for MTL and the 0.45 ohm is for RDL vaping. Unfortunately, only the 1.0 ohm coil is supplied with the MOTI Play kit so I can’t comment on the operation and performance of the 0.45 ohm coil.

The top of the MOTI Play is different from other traditional pod mods in that the pod forms part of the overall body size in terms of height and width. When the pod is removed from the MOTI Play body, when looking at it front on, it has a 23mm high by 22mm wide section missing. When the pod is fitted, it forms the top and side flat symmetrical edge (you’ll see what I mean from the photos).

Within the pod recess are two gold plated spring loaded coil contact pins that sit in a black housing with an airflow opening in one corner. Two rectangular magnets are positioned in the other side of the pod recess sitting flush against the vertical flat side of the MOTI Play body.
The beauty of this design is that when the pod is fitted, the front and back plus the side and top fit really well and look symmetrical.
On the bottom of the MOTI Play are the usual CE markings and on one corner (beneath the pod side) is a slight cut-out recess where the variable airflow dial is placed. The base is flat so there are no problems when standing upright.

MOTI’s branding is pretty discrete and kept to a minimum, with their name “MOTI”, the name of the device “MOTI Play”, “900mAh” and “Made In China” screen printed onto the lower front face plate. In the center of the front face is a large “X” which I found quite interesting as it appeared to change color depending on the position I was tilting it.
The reverse side of the MOTI Play is unmarked and the Mirror Silver one I was using showed every fingermark but I didn’t care, it looked really good as I could see my reflection in it! The Cyber Blue one was equally as nice but was non-reflective so didn’t suffer with fingermarks.
With regards to safety features, the on-board chip provides the following prompts such as:
- 10 seconds timeout (vape cut-off)
- Low battery voltage
- No coil/pod detected
- Short circuit and low resistance cut-off
There are 7 colors available in the MOTI Play Pod Kit range:
- Pearl White
- Cyber Blue
- Alloy Black
- Mirror Silver
- Army Green
- Dark Purple
- Blush Pink
The aesthetics of the MOTI Play are very difficult to convey in writing but hopefully you can see all the curves and pattern designs and how well it all blends into each part. It really is something else. It’s a futuristic yet very pleasing on the eye design.

I forgot to mention there are also two cut-outs in the top right-hand corner of the MOTI Play body so you can attach the supplied lanyard if you so desire.
Overall, the MOTI Play feels solid, robust and very well built. It’s very compact, very thin, feels very comfortable to hold, performs really well and in my opinion looks a great pod kit.
MOTI Play Pod

The MOTI Play pod is re-fillable via a side fill port concealed behind a black silicone rubber flap and stopper, has a 2ml e-liquid capacity, accepts replaceable push fit MOTI Play coils and is constructed out of clear PCTG material.
Its dimensions are 39.5mm tall (including the mouthpiece) by 22.5mm wide and 12.5mm deep. It also has a removable 510 Duckbill style mouthpiece measuring 11.7mm wide by 6mm deep with a 7.7mm center oval opening leading down onto the top of the coil. The weight of the pod including the coil is 9 grams.
One outstanding plus for me is the clarity that you can see the e-liquid level and the coil while the pod is in place. The entire pod is visible from 3 of its sides. Because one side of the pod sits flush against the vertical side of the MOTI Play body, the recess that the pod sits into is only 3mm deep.

While I’m on the subject of positives, the duckbill mouthpiece is removable so you can replace this with any 510 drip tip if you so wish. I may be mistaken but I’m sure this is the first small pod that I’ve seen having this option.
You can also swivel the mouthpiece round if you prefer so depending on how you hold the MOTI Play, the mouthpiece will always fit perfectly between your lips.

The MOTI Play pods side fill port is concealed behind a flush fitting black silicone rubber plug. To gain access to the fill port, the pod has to be removed from the MOTI Play body. This plug has an indented arrow on it which identifies which end is to be lifted away to gain access to the filling port.
When the plug is opened, the other end of the silicone rubber flap will remain attached to the pod so it won’t get lost. This e-liquid fill port is a pretty decent size oval opening measuring around 5mm so it’s big enough to accept short stubby e-liquid tip bottles.

On the bottom of the pod is a single large rectangular magnet that also extends to the flat side of the pod. This means the pod connects and secures to the MOTI Play body really well. There is also the circular center opening for the push fit MOTI Play coils.
The pod accepts the MOTI Play range of push fit replaceable coils. Included in the kit is the 1.0 ohm coil but you can also purchase the 0.45 ohm coil if you wish.
Three O-Rings on the coil, two on the top that fit into the chimney section in the pod and one on the base of the coil, do a great job of sealing the coil in place to prevent e-liquid seepage. When fitting the coil, do ensure you line up the top of the coil so it easily slides into the bottom of the chimney opening.
Branding on the pod is non-existent other than the CE markings printed on one side.
Inserting the pod is straightforward enough, simply place the pod to the MOTI Play body opening, making sure the flat side of the pod is against the flat vertical side of the MOTI Play body. It will sit into the recess and be locked and held in place by the magnets.
Removing the pod is carried out by applying light pressure to the pod body and pulling away from the MOTI Play body/battery.
Each time the pod is removed or attached to the MOTI Play body, the display will indicate “Atomizer In” or “Out”.
MOTI Play | Functionality
The MOTI Play is a simple straightforward device to use with no complicated menu structures to worry about. It’s a variable wattage (5W-30W) pod device with a 0.96 inch OLED single color display which shows all of the set parameters. Changes to these are carried out by sequential presses of the fire button and the wattage button as follows:
- Fire button pressed 5 times turns the device on or off
- Wattage button will increment the wattage in 1W steps
- Fire and Wattage buttons pressed together will Lock/Unlock the device
- Fire and Wattage buttons pressed together with the power off will Reset the Puff and Time counter
Holding the wattage button down will increment the wattage adjustment faster. The wattage button will only increase the wattage level, it doesn’t decrease. Each press of the button will increase the wattage by 1W. If you want to decrease the power level, you press the wattage button until the power level is at its maximum at which point the next press of the button will start the power level back at 5W.
Inactivity of any button presses or vaping activity will put the display screen into standby mode (blank) after a period of 1 minute. Pressing any button or vaping will bring up the display screen again.

Included on the 0.96 inch display is all of the read-out information as follows:
- Battery level indicator
- Wattage levels
- Lock / Unlock
- Coil resistance reading
- Voltage reading
- Puff counter
- Vaping time reading
Also the safety read-outs for the protection of the MOTI Play are:
- Time Over:- 10 seconds vape cut-off
- Bat Low:- Low battery (<3.3V)
- No Atomizer:- No coil/pod detected
- Ohms Too Low:- Short circuit and low resistance cut-off
- Wattage/Power Locked
To clear the Puff Counter and Vaping Time readings, turn off the MOTI Play by pressing the fire button 5 times in quick succession. Once it’s powered down, press and hold both the fire button and wattage button together. After 2 seconds the display will indicate “Clear Puff”. Turn the device back on and the display screen Time and Puff Counter readings will be re-set.

Equally, to lock the fire button and wattage adjustment button, press and hold both these buttons together while the device is powered. The padlock symbol in the top left-hand corner of the display screen will change from open to locked.

This will disable the operation of both buttons leaving only the auto draw working. Pressing either of these two buttons will bring up the prompt “Wattage & Power Locked”.
Automatic Coil Recognition:
When a new coil is fitted in the pod, the MOTI Play automatically detects the type of coil fitted in the pod and selects the optimum wattage for that coil. Adjustment of the wattage above or below this optimum value is still possible by the wattage button if you want to fine tune your wattage.
There are currently two different resistance coils for the MOTI Play; 1.0 ohm which is supplied with the kit and a 0.45 ohm which you have to purchase separately.
When using the 1.0 ohm coil, the maximum wattage that you can select is 16W as this is the maximum power level that this coil will operate at. The 0.45 ohm coil will operate up to the maximum 30W that the MOTI Play is capable of delivering.
Airflow:

The MOTI Play incorporates an adjustable airflow dial on the bottom of the MOTI Play body. Two different size slots in the dial allow for opening or restricting the airflow to the coil to fine tune your vaping style and experience.
This dial fully rotates and aligns with a fixed cut-out in the base of the MOTI Play. As you can see from the photo, the dial is knurled on its outer edge so can be adjusted from either the bottom or the side of the MOTI Play.
MOTI Play | Performance
Only one coil comes supplied with the MOTI Play kit, a 1.0 ohm honeycomb mesh coil designed for MTL vaping. There is a 0.45 ohm coil but this has to be purchased separately and unfortunately I didn’t have one to try.
As always, prime your coils before using them which will help prolong their life. Drip a few drops of e-liquid into the wicking ports of the coil and then fill the pod and leave to stand for 10-15 minutes.

1.0 ohm Mesh Coil
MOTI specify the minimum and maximum wattage range for this coil is 10W-16W.
I chose a 50/50 e-liquid with 6mg freebase nicotine to start with so as not to overload the wicking ports.
After my initial priming and setting the power level to the minimum the MOTI Play goes down to (5W), I took my first few draws to bed the coil in. Even at this power level it fired and the flavor of my e-liquid came through. Even more surprising I was getting some vapor.

Three clicks to up the power level to 8W made all the difference. The flavor came through strong and the vapor was so much more than I expected. Taking the power level to the minimum recommendation of 10W just further enhanced the performance.
The flavor at this power level was crisp and exactly what I was expecting with a good throat hit. Vapor for such a small coil/pod was really good and very dense.
Because it can go to 16W I did try it and yes, the flavor came through stronger but the amount of vapor produced at this power level was incredible, so much more than you would expect, very impressive. What I did notice at this power level was the airflow control improved and the tightness of the auto draw increased (less pressure to draw).

I did try a 70VG/30PG e-liquid through the pod and had no issues with dry hits. The coil and wicking ports keep up really well.
My ideal wattage with this coil was a mere 9W which was plenty enough to enjoy a really nice vape and obviously to conserve the battery power. I didn’t get any gurgling or spitting from the mouthpiece and the draw was nice and quiet.
Any Leaks?
Throughout my time using the MOTI Play, there was no leaking. When re-filling the pod I did observe very slight condensation around the bottom of the coil and against the side casing where the pod sits. This wasn’t excessive at all but I would recommend just wiping this away each time you fill the pod so it doesn’t build up.
This is normal and found on the majority of pods. I would recommend if you’re not using it for any length of time, remove the pod from the device body so e-liquid seepage doesn’t cause any malfunction on the mod.
Airflow
Airflow adjustment gave the expected results but I wouldn’t say you can achieve a tight MTL draw. With the airflow on its widest open setting, you have to draw on the pod quite hard for it to fire. I found on most occasions I kept the airflow shut off or used the fire button.
Auto Draw
Auto draw worked faultlessly. With the airflow closed it fired every time. Opening the airflow does require a much stronger draw to activate.
Performance Summary
There is nothing I dislike about the MOTI Play. The flavor and vapor are far better than I expected and it really does perform on par with much bigger and more powerful devices. This is the best MOTI device I’ve come across so far.
MOTI Play | Battery Performance
The MOTI Play’s 900mAh internal battery capacity was more than enough to provide a good day’s vaping. On average I was achieving around 10 hours of vaping time on a single charge. Considering the compact size of the device, this was pretty good.
My puff count recorded each time a reading of over 500 (max 562) with my wattage level set to 9W so no worries on that front.
Battery performance is always subjective and depends on the power you vape at and your vaping style.
Keeping an eye on your remaining battery level is easily done with the small battery icon in the top right hand corner of the display. As the charge diminishes the number of white bars in the icon reduces. Once the battery is depleted of its charge, a “Low Power” prompt will appear on the screen and you will no longer be able to vape. At this point the MOTI Play will require charging.
Pass-through vaping is enabled on the device so you can vape while it’s being charged. This function won’t kick in when first placed on charge; you will have to wait until the battery level percentage on the display exceeds 10%.
How do I Fill the MOTI Play Pod?

The MOTI Play pod is a side fill design. You’ll have to remove the pod from the MOTI Play body in order to fill with e-liquid. Remove the pod and you will see the fill port is located and concealed behind a black silicon rubber flap. This flap sits flush with the indented side of the pod. A small arrow highlights which part of the rubber flap lifts away. There is a small cut-out above the top of the rubber flap to assist with fingernail placement.
This silicone rubber flap is attached to the pod body by a small circular magnet so there’s no chance of it getting lost. Pull open the flap and insert your e-liquid bottle tip into the oval opening. The filling port is approximately 6mm wide so does accept those larger stubby e-liquid tip bottles.

Tilt the pod on its side to aid filling and to get the maximum amount of e-liquid into the pod. Once filled, re-insert the silicon rubber flap making sure the fill port is securely re-seated.
Re-insert the pod into the MOTI Play body until it’s held in place by the magnetic catches and the main screen displays “Atomizer In”.
Quick Tip: If you are filling the pod for the first time, once filled, leave to stand for approx. 10-15 minutes before you start to vape. This will help saturate the wick fully in e-liquid and help prolong the life of the coil/pod.
How do I Change the Coil in the MOTI Play Pod?
The pod will have to be removed from the MOTI Play body first to gain access to the bottom of the pod. When you remove the pod the MOTI Play screen will display “Atomizer Out”.

Once the pod has been detached, simply pull the coil out from the bottom of the pod. If you have e-liquid in the pod, turn the pod upside down and place your thumb over the mouthpiece before you remove the coil. This will help keep e-liquid spillages to a minimum.

Fitting a new coil is straightforward. Slowly push your new coil into the opening in the base of the pod and press it fully home. Make sure the top of the coil sits in the chimney housing below the mouthpiece. The base of the coil will sit slightly proud of the base of the pod by about 2mm, this is normal and allows access for when you need to take the coil out.
Do ensure that your new coil is primed by dripping a few drops of e-liquid in the wicking ports. Fill the pod with your e-liquid and leave to stand for 15 minutes so the e-liquid fully saturates the wick. See our guide on Prolonging the Life of your Coil.
When re-fitting the pod to the MOTI Play the main display screen the message “Atomizer In” will be shown highlighting the pod is fitted correctly.
I also recommend when first vaping on a new coil, lower the wattage and take a few draws to pull e-liquid through the coil. Slowly increase the wattage, each time taking a few draws until you reach your desired wattage setting. This will help in improving the longevity of your coil.
How do I Charge the MOTI Play?

Because the MOTI Play has an internal battery, charging is carried out using the supplied USB to Type-C charging cable. Simply connect the cable into the Type-C port on the side of the MOTI Play body and the other end into a suitable USB power source. The specified charging circuit of the MOTI Play is 5V/1A.

When the MOTI Play is placed on charge, the small battery icon in the top right-hand corner of the main display will start to incrementally cycle. Shortly after, the display screen will change to a larger single battery icon that will remain illuminated throughout the charging cycle.
The battery icon will continually scroll from 1 bar to 5 bars with the numerical battery charge percentage value displayed just below the battery icon. This numerical value and the scrolling battery bars will continually increment until it reaches 100% of its charge.

When full charge is achieved after approximately 60 minutes (1 hour), the display will remain illuminated and the 5 battery bars will remain static with the percentage value showing 100%. After a further couple of minutes, the display screen will extinguish at which point remove the power source.
I timed the charge cycle from “Low Power” (0%) to 100% charge and it took 56 minutes.
The MOTI Play does include pass-through allowing you to charge and vape at the same time. However, this was a little strange. When the battery is depleted and first placed on charge, pass-through didn’t work. Once the charge had reached over 10% the pass-through started to work.
While the MOTI Play is being charged, it does remain cool to the touch but I would still recommend to ONLY charge the device on a non-flammable surface.
As with any vape device, NEVER leave it unattended whilst charging.
MOTI Play Pod Kit Price
The MOTI Play pod kit quite frankly is worth every penny/cent. For such a compact device that not only looks really good, the performance is excellent. Variable wattage, re-fillable and replaceable coils with variable airflow makes this a terrific all round vape pod.

MOTI Play Pod Kit Summary
I can sum up my time using the MOTI Play as completely enjoyable and such a pleasure to use.

It has everything and more you’d expect from a small compact pod mod. I’ve used a few different MOTI devices over my time and this one really DOES stand out.
The styling, function and performance of this pod kit are brilliant. There are so many plus points, such as the pod being totally clear, re-fillable with replaceable coils producing great flavor and amazing vapor. The pod mod itself having the informative display, good battery performance with both auto draw and fire button control coupled with the really stunning overall appearance.
I would certainly recommend this to a new or experienced vaper alike.

is it compitable with moti x coil?
Hi Muhammad, thanks for your question. No, the coils between the two devices are not compatible. The Moti X uses the X range of coils whereas the Play uses the coils specific to the Moti Play.
good review thanks
Thanks Mroi, always nice to hear our efforts have not gone unnoticed. Appreciate your comment, thank you.
Thanks for the review. Do you know if there are any RBA options?
Hi Ron, thanks for you comment, glad you liked our review. As far as I’m aware there is not an RBA coil that will fit in the Moti Play. I doubt if Moti have any plans to bring one out as the coils are pretty small.
I’ve used little RBA coils in other devices and to be honest they are difficult to build on and dont quite match the performance of the stock coils. If you want to go down the coil building route I would suggest getting a dedicated RBA Tank, I use the Digiflavour Torch RTA daily and love it.
We’ve done a couple of reviews on RTAs, take a look and see what you think.
Thanks again.
I’m pleased and impressed with this device, vapes very well and flavour so tasty, had mine for a day now with no problems, I’m thinking about buying another device @ £22.
Love it.
Hi Jeff, thanks for your comment, am pleased you’re enjoying the Moti Play so far. I was impressed with the form factor and performance from it. Moti have come on in leaps and bounds over the last year or so and produced some really good pods. Always worth getting a second one as a back up.
Hello, how long is the coil life? This is important for me…
Hi Seda, thanks for your question. Coil life is pretty good, on average I get around 3-4 weeks out of a coil, sometimes more. Coil life is subjective tho, always prime and slowly bed the coil in first. Certain juices will shorten coil life as will excessive wattage. Hope this helps.
this product looks nice.
how much about it?
Hi,
It is a nice product and performs very well. We included links in our review to a place that’s selling it. It’s still very new so more companies will be stocking it soon. It’s around the £25 mark but that does depend where you’re located and where you purchase it from.
