MOTI X Mini Pod Kit Review | DTL, Sub-Ohm Vaping Made Easy!

Today we’re taking a look at one of MOTI’s newest and most exciting products; the MOTI X Mini. MOTI were kind enough to send us this direct-to-lung (DTL), sub-ohm pod mod for review, along with 6 packs of mouth-watering prefilled flavor pods.

We recently wrote a piece on the MUSE Design Awards and MOTI managed to pick themselves up the Silver Award for the innovative design of the all-in-one (AIO) MOTI X Mini. The 37 strong jury even stated that MOTI had “given technology an artistic touch” with the creation of this futuristic looking pod vape.

It’s a DTL vaper’s dream, with adaptive auto wattage and the choice of either prefilled closed system pods or open refillable pods. The honeycomb mesh coil promises to deliver incredible flavors and the internal 1150 mAh battery should provide plenty of vaping time!

As one of MOTI’s newest pod vapes the X Mini was designed in collaboration with Vaporesso and we couldn’t wait to see what effect this had on the final product. We’ve reviewed several MOTI products in the past (MOTI S Lite, MOTI Mega and more) but the X Mini looks to be an entirely new kind of beast.

What’s in the Box?

The MOTI X Mini comes packaged in a sleek and attractive box with all the usual safety warnings and a list of specifications. There’s also a QR/security code on the back of the box that allows you to check the authenticity of the X Mini you’ve purchased. Once you slide off the cardboard sleeve you’ll find the following contents inside:

Unfortunately there were no refillable pods included with the kit we received, so you may have to purchase these separately. For the purposes of this review I’ll focus mainly on MOTI’s prefilled flavor pods.

The prefilled pods come packaged in boxes with a bit more color. The color of each box matches the given flavor and there are two 4ml pods in each box.

Inside you’ll find the two prefilled pods packaged in individual foil cases and a user manual that provides instructions for fitting and using the pods with the X Mini. On the packaging there’s also a list of the ingredients used, specifications of the pod and coil and another QR code to check the authenticity.

MOTI X Mini | Design and Appearance

In terms of the X Mini’s design and appearance, MOTI really have ticked all the right boxes! Firstly it’s available in a choice of 6 colors:

• Aegean Blue
• Gunmetal Grey
• Mystic Purple
• Aurora Green
• Space Grey
• Galaxy Silver

The X Mini pictured in this review is the ‘Space Grey’ version and visually it’s one of the most interesting vapes I’ve seen this year. The first thing that immediately grabs your attention is the futuristic, exposed design.

While the top third of the body is made from Aluminum Alloy the bottom of the device is made from a clear Polycarbonate shell that exposes the internal 1150 mAh battery and circuitry. The circuit board runs vertically along the length of the X Mini and inline with the rubber firing button.

Under the Polycarbonate shell you can also see MOTI’s branding along with the ‘X Mini’ logo and a large colored ‘X’. It’s really subtle and adds nicely to the overall aesthetic. When paired with the exposed design the X Mini is a really striking and stylish device. It reminds me of the kind of gadget you’d see in the shot of a Star Wars or Star Trek movie.

The capsule shape is also really unique and it’s refreshing to see a pod vape that’s breaking the mould. So often we see vapes that are entirely cylindrical or just plain box shaped. The capsule design also means there are no hard edges, in fact it’s edges are entirely smooth and curved. This makes for a super comfortable hold and an easy grip when vaping.

I also expected the capsule shape to mean the device wouldn’t stand upright on it’s own, but I was pleasantly surprised that it does so with no problems. While not a major positive, it does mean you don’t have to worry about the X Mini rolling off your desk, or about any stray e-liquid running out the mouthpiece. For these two reasons I’d always recommend standing the X Mini upright, rather than laying it down on its side.

Another striking feature of the MOTI X Mini is also the incredibly compact size! Measuring only 72.3mm in height and 25.4mm in width, it’s one of the smaller pod vapes we’ve recently reviewed. This makes it super convenient for taking with you on the go and easy for slipping in a pocket or purse.

The light 56g weight (with 4ml pod) only adds to the portability and makes this a vape that’s perfect for taking out and about. In all my time testing the X Mini I barely noticed it sitting in my pocket.

And despite the compact size and light weight, the X Mini still manages to feel robust and sturdy. While I’ve been lucky not to drop mine yet, when I inevitably do at some point, it feels like it could withstand a fair drop.

When it comes to the functionality of the X Mini there’s actually very little to say. It’s a pod vape designed for convenience and there’s no variable wattage or settings to adjust. You simply drop in your pod and away you go! It’s an incredibly simple design and one that’s perfect for those who are new to vaping.

So many times in the past I’ve had friends or family members give up on vaping purely because they find the technical settings and jargon too confusing. What the X Mini offers is a straightforward, no-nonsense way to vape that’s ideal for those looking to switch to vaping.

For some this may be a negative…. I know several members of the Vaping Hardware team love to tweak the settings and power levels to create the perfect vaping experience. If you’re anything like me though, the simple things in life are best!

The wattage is adjusted automatically by the MCU Chip inside the X Mini depending on the coil being used and the given ohms of the coil at the time of vaping. The power level ranges from 10-29W with the fire response speed coming in at 0.2 seconds (20000/S).

Currently there are two options in the X Coil range; 0.35 ohms and 0.70 ohms. The coils fitted inside the prefilled pods I received were the 0.35 ohm version. With this coil the X Mini auto fires at 29W and creates the perfect draw for DTL.

When using the 0.70 ohm X Coil the device fires at 16W and is much more suitable for a restricted direct-to-lung (RDL) draw. While a mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw can be achieved with the airflow almost shut off, the X Mini is clearly a cloud-chasing pod mod with a DTL draw in mind.

For me personally I loved the adaptive power control and generally how easy the MOTI X Mini is to use. There’s literally no setup time except the 5 presses of the power button needed to turn it on. Think mechanical mod with a few rather handy safety measures thrown in!

On the subject of safety features, these are communicated via the large neon blue LED light at the bottom of the X Mini. Rather than a small LED puff indicator like the majority of vapes have, the X Mini’s entire bottom end lights up with a bright azure blue when you fire the pod.

The LED communicates the following safety prompts:

• Atomizer works: Long blue light
• No pod detected: Blue light flashes 3 times
• High resistance coil: Blue light flashes 3 times
• Low resistance coil: Blue light flashes 1 time
• Short circuit alert: Blue light flashes 1 time
• Low battery: Blue light flashes 5 times
• Overheat: Blue light flashes 8 times
• Long vape alert (over 8s): Blue light flashes 10 times
• Charging: Blue light keeps flashing
• Full charge: Blue light stops flashing

To charge the device the Type-C USB charging port is located on the bottom of the X Mini which means you have to lay the device on it’s side while recharging. For this I’d recommend taking out the pod to avoid any e-juice seeping out the mouthpiece. With that being said, not a single one of the 12 pods I used leaked… not so much as a single drop!

The X Mini is also designed with pass-through charging capability. This means that even when you do have it on charge, you can still continue vaping.

Another stand-out feature of the design is the airflow control. While a large majority of pod vapes rely on fixed airflow or a fairly rudimentary adjustable control, the X Mini has built in stepless airflow control. This means there’s no switch or dial to turn in order to control the airflow into the coil.

Instead the X Mini has two horizontal cut outs in the Aluminum Alloy section of the body, either side of the firing button. On the bottom of each pod housing there are then two matching airflow slots that align with the cut outs on the X Mini body when the pod is inserted.

To open or close off the airflow you simply rotate the pod in the recess hole. It’s a really seamless design and makes finding the perfect sweet spot super easy.

X Pod Design

The X Pods themselves are dome shaped and completely see-through. This adds to the overall capsule design and also makes it super convenient for seeing the amount of e-juice left in the pod. The mouthpiece at the top of the pod is slightly bigger than an average drip tip and in an ‘O’ shape that allows for the perfect DTL draw.

The pods sit halfway inside the Aluminum Alloy section of the body and there’s just a bit too much wiggle room that results in a very slight rattle on the pod. With that being said, the X Pod is held securely in place with a strong magnet that snaps the pod from your fingers at the very last second. You only really feel the slight rattle on the pod when you adjust the airflow.

The other notable feature of the X Pods is the COS (coil and oil separation) technology they incorporate. It’s not something I’ve come across before but COS means the e-juice in the pod is kept entirely separate from the coil in the pod before use.

When you first take a prefilled pod from the packet you’ll notice a small rod taped into the mouthpiece. You simply push this rod further down into the mouthpiece which clicks the coil into place and allows the e-juice to flow freely to the mesh coil.

The benefits of this are two-fold. Firstly the design is entirely leak-proof. Because the coil isn’t engaged there are no airholes for the e-juice to seep from during transit. The second benefit is that the lack of airflow means the e-juice is perfectly preserved before use. This means you get the freshest and best flavor possible!

For me this is a completely innovative design that shows the steps MOTI have taken to provide the optimum vaping experience.

Overall I was really blown away by the design of the MOTI X Mini. The only minor disappointment for me was the lack of auto draw. While the fire button worked perfectly, I found myself missing the extra added convenience of just drawing on the mouthpiece to fire the coil.

Despite this minor nag, the design of the MOTI X Mini is fantastic and it’s easily one of the best pod vapes I’ve ever used. The exposed insides, bright neon LED, integrated stepless airflow control and quirky capsule shape make it really stand out from the crowd.

The see-through pod design and COS technology are also super handy and the ease of use was fantastic! With the X Mini it really is a case of ‘less is more’!

MOTI X Mini | Performance

When it comes to the performance of the MOTI X Mini, unbelievably, things get even better! The first thing to mention is the sheer plumes of vapor this thing throws out. The 0.35 ohm mesh coil works brilliantly and absolutely explodes like a supernova!

The amount of vapor produced is the best I’ve personally experienced with a pod or tank device. The only comparison I can really make is with the vapor produced by a rebuildable dripper atomizer (RDA). I also suspect that the e-juice inside the prefilled pods consists of a greater ratio of vegetable glycerine (VG), the ingredient that produces the thick, fluffy clouds we all love.

While the PG/VG ratio of the prefilled pods isn’t specified, MOTI do recommend using a VG heavy juice in the refillable X Pod. In terms of the 0.70 ohm coil I was unfortunately unable to test it. However, if the 0.35 ohm X Coil is anything to go by, it’ll produce a comparatively crazy amount of vapor.

It was clear after just the first few puffs that the MOTI X Mini is perfect for DTL vapers who love chasing clouds. Within just five minutes of use the room I was sitting in looked like a fog machine had slowly been chuffing away!

The second noteworthy feature is the exceptional flavor, produced in part by the honeycomb mesh coil. Because this type of coil provides a larger surface area for heating the e-juice, flavor intensity is vastly increased.

The mesh coil also ensures there’s no drop off in flavor throughout the pod’s lifespan. The last puff on a prefilled X Pod tastes just as good as the very first draw! Just be wary not to keep puffing once there’s no more visible juice in the pod… I made this mistake once and received a particularly nasty burnt hit.

I’ll go on to discuss the prefilled pod flavors in more detail further on, but it’s worth noting here that the flavor produced by the X Mini was absolutely fantastic and one of the best experiences I’ve had when trying new flavors.

The large ‘O’ shaped mouthpiece and the easily adjustable airflow also combine to create a really enjoyable draw and a very satisfying vape experience.

Another thing that also performed well on the X Mini was the firing button. Because it’s made from a soft rubber material there’s no rattle or wobble when you press it and it’s also super responsive (20000/s). It worked flawlessly each and every time I vaped the X Mini.

In regards to the battery life things were not quite as impressive, but still good nonetheless. I’m a fairly heavy vaper and it’s not often that my vape leaves my sight. Despite this the battery capacity still lasted me from around 7 o’clock in the morning until 10’clock each night.

For a light-medium vaper I’d guess the battery life would last for up to 2 days before needing a recharge. It’s also worth remembering that I used the prefilled pods with the 0.35 ohm coils. This meant the X Mini was firing the coil at the maximum wattage possible (29W). This of course would have been a high drain on the internal battery!

If you’re using the 0.70 ohm coils in the refillable X Pod (as I plan to), I’m sure the battery capacity would be greatly increased. For a light vaper I’d estimate the battery life could last anywhere up to 4 days at a time.

That being said these guesses on battery life are purely speculative. As soon as I use the X Mini with the 0.70 ohm coil in a refillable pod, I’ll pop back here and update the information. What I can say with certainty is that the X Mini provides a full day of heavy vaping when firing at the maximum wattage. For such a tiny pod vape that’s still mighty impressive!

Similarly the 4ml pods also lasted a reasonably good time, though not quite as long as the battery. Each of the 12 pods I vaped on lasted for around three quarters of a day. This isn’t a super long time, but considering it’s a mesh coil firing at 29W I was actually surprised the prefilled pods lasted as long as they did.

While you could argue it’s a bit of a juice guzzler, the trade off in terms of vapor and flavor production make this more than worth it!

When the battery does need recharging the large blue LED flashes 5 times slowly. After plugging the X Mini in the LED repeatedly flashes until the device reaches full charge, at which point the light stops flashing.

The charging port is rated at 1A and to fully charge the MOTI X Mini takes just under an hour. Not only is this a quick charge time for the internal 1150 mAh battery, the added bonus of pass-through charging means you won’t have to go without.

Overall I was just as impressed with the performance of the X Mini as I was with the design and look of it. The vapor production is absolutely insane and provides a really satisfying draw. The pod and coil deliver great throat hits and the flavor intensity was amazing!

If the battery capacity and pod lifespan were just a tiny bit longer the X Mini would be my perfect device in terms of performance. As it is the X Mini is easily one of the best I’ve ever used!

MOTI X Mini | Flavors

As the MOTI X Mini is a relatively new device we don’t yet have too much information on the available flavor range for the prefilled pods. However, MOTI were kind enough to send us 6 packs of different flavor pods in a 3mg/ml nicotine strength to try.

What surprised me most about the different flavors was just how authentic they taste. There wasn’t a single flavor I didn’t enjoy and I can’t wait to find out what the other flavors in the range are.

I’ll do my best to describe each of the 6 flavors we received with a brief summary below:

Of the six flavors I personally tried it’s obvious that MOTI have put a great amount of time and effort into creating unique palettes that absolutely burst with flavor.

There wasn’t a single flavor I didn’t like. In fact, all six flavors were absolutely delicious and easily all day vapes. They’re among the nicest, most authentic tasting flavors I’ve tried in my 8 years of vaping!

If you buy yourself a MOTI X Mini then I’d definitely recommend treating yourself to some prefilled flavor pods to really experience the intense flavors the X Mini is capable of delivering.

Unfortunately again we don’t have too much information due to the X Mini being a relatively new product. With that being said, the Vaporesso version of the X Mini (which is essentially the same device) is currently retailing for around $20 (on some sites even less!).

I think it’s safe to assume that MOTI’s version of the X Mini will be very similarly priced, making this incredibly great value for money.

At this price, it really is a no-brainer. The incredible vapor and flavor production alone make this a must buy in my eyes. Add to this the innovative design and the X Mini is easily one of my top recommendations for this year.

If I’m being honest, it’s not often that I’ll carry on using a device much after I’ve finished testing and reviewing it over a number of weeks. Usually it’s onto the next product without much thought for the one that came before it.

With the X Mini however, I didn’t want to put it down! I loved using it so much that I’ve already ordered two of the refillable 4ml pods.

With the incredible flavor of the prefilled pods I know I’ll be picking up some more of these in the near future too!

For me there were so many positives and only a few very minor negatives. If the X Mini is one of the first collaborative projects between MOTI and Vaporesso then I can’t wait to see what this dream team bring us in the future.

There are so many reasons to buy yourself a MOTI X Mini… the incredible vapor and flavor production, excellent airflow and DTL draw, the futuristic, funky design and the sheer ease of use.

Add to this the innovative COS technology, the adaptive power control and the super handy see-through design of the pods and you can see the efforts that MOTI have made to create a truly unique and high-performing device.
