Voopoo Drag S2 and Drag X2 Review | Introducing the PnP X Pod and Coils

Richard WinterPod Vapes 2 Comments

Up for review today is not one but two new devices to come out from the Voopoo camp. Welcome to Vaping Hardware’s Voopoo Drag S2 and Drag X2 review.

Voopoo Drag X2 and Drag S2 with their boxes

These are both fully upgraded kits from the already acclaimed original Drag S and Drag X that took the vaping world by storm back in 2020. We didn’t review those at that time but were fortunate enough to review their Drag X Plus Kit and the Drag X Plus Professional Edition, both back in the summer of 2021.

Things have come a long way since the introduction of those kits that popularized the advent of the term “Pod Mod”. These two new Drag devices build upon those earlier releases with some very inspiring upgrades.

Voopoo continue to dominate the vaping market and not only have they released a plethora of devices under the “Drag” brand, they are also leaders with their “Vinci” and “Argus” range of devices too. Let’s not forget, their PnP range of coils have set the benchmark with coil performance as well.

We’ve decided to combine the Drag S2 and Drag X2 pod mods into one review, like we did back in 2021 with Voopoo’s Vinci 2 and Vinci X2 Review and equally the Voopoo Argus MT/XT Review.

The White Drag S2 held in hand
The Grey Drag X2 held in hand

They are basically the same beast but with one major difference; the Drag S2 is powered by an internal battery and the Drag X2 uses an external 18650 battery. Throughout the review you’ll see both the Drag S2 and Drag X2 and you can quickly tell the difference, the Drag S2 is White and the Drag X2 is Grey.

Carry on reading and see what they both have to offer!

Overview of the Drag S2 and Drag X2

Firstly, both the Drag S2 and Drag X2 still follow the tubular style with the unmistakable leather hide wrap around on the sides and back of the device. However, gone is the instantly recognizable large “Drag” branding on the hide.

Drag X2 slighter bigger than the Drag S2
Drag X2 and Drag S2 reverse side leather hide showing the two different patterns

The Drag S2 is slightly smaller than its counterpart as it’s powered by an internal 2500mAh capacity battery and reaches a maximum wattage of 60W. The Drag X2 is slightly larger because it utilizes an external 18650 battery and can reach a maximum wattage of 80W.

At the heart of the Drag S2 and Drag X2 is Voopoo’s latest Gene chipset (GENE.TT 2.0), which we saw when we reviewed the Drag M100S earlier this year. This provides 3 different modes of operation; “Smart”, “RBA” and “Eco” which we’ll cover in more detail later in the review.

All the User Interface (UI) information is displayed, together with the range of safety prompts and protections on a 0.96” TFT colored display which is identical on both the Drag S2 and Drag X2 pod mods.

PnP X Pod with PnP X coil
Base View of PnP X Pod with PnP X coil

Where things have taken a major turn and look set to complement Voopoo’s already famous PnP coils are the new PnP X mesh coils with a 4 layer leak-proof design, thermo-stable cotton and increased coil life. If this wasn’t enough, these new coils fit into a new 5ml standard /2ml TPD side fill top airflow PnP X cartridge (pod).

One thing worth noting though, this new PnP X pod is only compatible with the PnP X coils so the existing PnP coils that we’ve come to love when using the earlier Drag pods or Voopoo’s other devices won’t fit or work in this new PnP X pod.

I would like to thank Whitney at Voopoo for sending me the Drag S2 and Drag X2 pod mod kits for the purpose of this review. As always this review is completely unbiased and is my honest opinions based during my time using and reviewing the products. Packaging

Voopoo Drag X2 and Drag S2 packaging

The Drag S2 and Drag X2 come in identical boxes with their overall dimensions measuring 144mm x 71mm x 49mm. They are a standard draw type cardboard box with a slide off outer sleeve. This sleeve is two-tone in color and patterned in the style that matches the pattern on the leather hide of the mod.

Voopoo Drag S2 Front View of the box

On the front of the sleeve is a photo of the Drag S2 or Drag X2 in the color of the included device. Printed on the front of the sleeve is “Voopoo” and “Drag S2” or “Drag X2” in large letters above the photo. Towards the bottom of the front sleeve are the words “Designed By Voopoo” in smaller lettering.

Left side view of the Drag S2 box
Right side view of the Drag S2 box

The left side of the outer sleeve has 3 printed icons with “PnP X Platform”, “Pod Top Airflow System” and “60W or 80W Power Output” depending on whether you have the S2 or X2. Towards the bottom of the sleeve is a “QR Code about Voopoo”. The other side of the outer sleeve has “Drag S2 or X2”, an “Authentication Sticker”, two Barcodes and the “Color” of the device.

Back view of the Drag S2 box

On the reverse side of the sleeve are the package contents, the manufacturer’s details and the relevant safety and warning statements. Ignore the “Sample” sticker as this is standard practice when manufacturers send out products for review.

Drag X2 and Drag S2 standing side by side against their boxes

Once the outer sleeve is removed, a thin cardboard box sits on top of a plastic insert tray which includes the spare PnP X coil in a sealed silver sachet, user manual and the Type-C charging cable. Underneath this accessory box is a molded plastic insert tray that houses the Drag S2 or X2 with the PnP X Pod attached with the PnP X coil pre-installed.

Preparing to Use the Voopoo Drag S2 and Drag X2

Drag X2 with the PnP X pod removed

When you first unbox your Drag S2 or Drag X2, the PnP X pod comes attached to the Drag S2 and Drag X2 which is already fitted with the PnP X coil (0.2 ohm for Drag S2 and 0.15 ohm for Drag X2). Before you can use your device, the thin film coil protector will have to be removed from the base plate of the coil.

Base view of the PnP X pod with the clear film sticker across the base of the coil
Base view of the PnP X pod with the clear film sticker removed

Once removed, take the coil out of the PnP X Pod and prime your coil by dripping a few drops of e-liquid into each of the wicking ports. Insert the coil into the base of the pod and fill the PnP X Pod with e-liquid through the e-liquid filling port behind the black silicone rubber stopper. Leave the PnP X Pod to stand for approximately 10-15 minutes before you fire it.

Fill the PnP X Pod with E-liquid and leave to stand for 15 minutes before using.

We’ve written a guide on “How to Prolong the Life of your Coil” which you may find worth reading.

The Drag S2 comes with a nominal charge so it can be used straightaway but we do recommend fully charging the device before you first use it. The Drag X2 uses an external 18650 rechargeable battery so you’ll have to remove the C-Frame battery cover and fit your fully charged 18650 battery before it will power up.

Drag X2 with C-Frame cover removed showing the battery housing and an 18650 battery

5 quick clicks of the fire button will turn your device on. I would suggest taking a few draws at low wattage, around 10W-15W to slowly bed the new coil in. Increase the wattage in 1W increments, each time taking a draw until you reach the wattage that gives you your ideal draw.

Voopoo Drag S2 and Drag X2 Kit Design and Appearance

Voopoo Drag S2 and Drag X2 Pod Mod

Drag X2 and Drag X2 front view

As we’ve said earlier, the Drag S2 and Drag X2 pod mods are basically the same design, with the same look and feel. The major difference being the Drag S2 operates from an internal 2500mAh capacity rechargeable battery providing a maximum power output of 60W. The Drag X2 is slightly larger in length by just 8mm and powered by an external 18650 battery giving a maximum power output of 80W.

Drag S2 and Drag X2 showing their maximum wattage on the 0.96 inch TFT display

The Voopoo Drag S2 and Drag X2 pod mods are constructed out of zinc alloy. Their shape is rectangular in design with a flat front face which accommodates the 0.96 inch colored TFT display, the circular 11.25mm concave fire button, two smaller 6.25mm circular concave up and down control buttons and the Type-C USB charging port.

Drag X2 Vs Drag M100S Vs Drag S2
Drag X2 – Drag M100S – Drag S2

Each narrow colored zinc alloy side frame of the Drag S2 and Drag X2 is contoured in the same style as we saw when we reviewed the Drag M100S kit which then blends into the curved leather hide that leads around the back of the device forming a complete semi-circle.

This leather hide which was made famous on the earlier Drag S/X includes the detailed stitched leather that we’ve come to love. This leather hide has a pattern branded into the rear section of the hide with the pattern different for each color design. And yes, the bold DRAG branding on the hide has now gone.

Difference between the base of the Drag S2 and Drag X2. Drag S2 has a rubber base

The base of the Drag S2 and Drag X2 are both flat so there are no issues with these standing upright. Comparing the two pod mods side by side highlights a difference between the Drag S2 and Drag X2 models. The S2 incorporates a rubber insert into the sculptured base so it provides a soft non-slip cushion whereas the X2 doesn’t have this.

This may be an oversight as the two versions we received to review were “Samples” so this rubber base may or may not be fitted on the production models of the Drag X2.

Drag S2/X2 Pod Recess
Drag S2/X2 close up view of pod recess

At the top of both the Drag S2 and Drag X2 pod mods is a circular pod recess that is 9.3mm deep leading down to an enclosed chrome flat metal plate. This plate incorporates 2 countersunk torx screws that hold the plate in situ and 2 gold plated spring loaded coil connecting pins. These coil pins locate with the bottom of the PnP X coils when the PnP X pod is fitted and held securely in place by the magnets on the pod base.

PnP X Base of pod showing the four magnets

Because the pod housing is completely circular, its orientation is not important and fits anyway round.

Airflow on the Drag S2 and Drag X2 is controlled from the PnP X pod therefore we will cover this in the following PnP X Pod Design section.

One major difference between the Drag S2 and Drag X2 is the battery configuration. The Drag S2 has an internal battery so can only be charged using the supplied cable connected into the USB port which is specified as 5V/2A. The Drag X2 uses an external 18650 battery which is fitted behind a removable C-Frame battery cover, this being the entire leather hide section of the Drag X2.

Pulling this C-Frame away from the Drag X2 body allows access to the 18650 battery compartment. Once the C-Frame is removed, there are “+” and “-” signs etched into the battery housing so you know the correct orientation in which the battery has to be fitted.

Drag X2 battery housing behind the C-Frame battery cover

There are two strong magnets inside each end of the C-Frame which do a good job of holding this battery cover in place when it’s fitted. The battery cover, once fitted, is a perfect fit. There are no sharp or protruding edges and there is no battery rattle from either the battery or the battery cover.

5V/2A Type-C charging port on the Drag S2 and Drag X2

Both the Drag S2 and Drag X2 have the same 5V/2A Type-C charging ports on the bottom front face of their bodies. With the Drag X2, you have the option of charging your 18650 battery in the mod itself or removing the battery and using an external battery charger (recommended).

Drag S2 Branding on the side of the leather
Drag X2 Branding on the side of the leather

With regards to the branding, something that was very obvious on the earlier Drag S/X models, the Drag S2 and Drag X2 are much more subtle. On the left side of the mod’s zinc alloy casing towards the bottom are the words “Gene TT”. The right side of the casing in the same position has “Voopoo” and just above that on the colored leather hide is the device name “Drag S2 or X2” branded into the leather.

The only other identification marks are at the base of the Drag S2 and Drag X2 which are the “CE” marking and the “Crossed Bin” icon.

Drag S2 0.96 inch TFT display

At the heart of both the Drag S2 and Drag X2 is the Gene TT 2.0 chip-set with controls all the user information on the 0.96 inch TFT display and also ensures the multitude of safety features are being maintained, such as:

  • Check Atomizer (no resistance detected)
  • Overtime protection
  • Output over current protection
  • Low battery protection
  • Max power protection
  • Over temperature protection
  • Overcharge protection
  • Atomizer short-circuit protection
Main display parameters on the Drag X2

The Drag S2 and Drag X2 main display screen is clear, bright and shows all of the operating parameters as follows:

  • Battery level icon with % value
  • Selected mode (Smart / RBA / Eco)
  • Large numerical wattage level
  • Smaller voltage value reading
  • Lock / Unlock
  • Coil resistance reading
  • Puff counter
  • Vape time duration

Three different modes of operation can be selected using a combination of the + and – control buttons together with the fire button. Smart mode will auto-detect the coil being used and set the optimum wattage value for that coil. RBA mode allows you to fully adjust the wattage from the mods minimum and maximum values and Eco mode where the battery power is optimized to conserve power drain. The display does dim slightly when Eco mode is selected.

A full explanation of these different modes and the operation of the control buttons are explained in the Functionality section in this review.

There are a total of 7 available colors in the Drag S2 and Drag X2 range and when purchased as a kit, the PnP X pod will be one of 3 different colors depending on the color kit you choose:

Drag S2 color range
  • Spray Black –                 PnP X pod = Black
  • Gray Metal –                  PnP X pod = Grey
  • Colorful Silver –             PnP X pod = Silver
  • Sky Blue –                      PnP X pod = Grey
  • Modern Red –                PnP X pod = Black
  • Glow Pink –                    PnP X pod = Black
  • Pearl White –                 PnP X pod = Silver

If you’ve not already guessed, the two colors we received and are showing throughout this review are Gray Metal and Pearl White.

Voopoo PnP X Pod

PnP X Pod in the color Gray against the Drag X2
PnP X pod in the color silver against the Drag S2

Firstly, the new PnP X pods on both the Drag S2 and Drag X2 are identical and completely interchangeable between the two devices. These new PnP X pods accept the new range of PnP X coils and are NOT compatible with the existing range of PnP coils.

These PnP X pods are classified as DTL pods and as such have fixed wide bore drip tips. Voopoo do have a PnP X pod that is a MTL variant which has a removable narrow bore drip tip and takes the higher resistance PnP X coils.

Close up view of the PnP X pods fitted in the Drag S2 and Drag X2

Both the Drag S2 and Drag X2 variants we received have the DTL PnP X pods so we can’t comment on the MTL version or its performance.

PnP X Pod with Top Airflow Control

Now….what we do have with these new PnP X pods is they are a top airflow design. This really should eliminate the majority of e-liquid leaks that we come to associate with bottom airflow pods/tanks.

PnP X branding on the PnP X Pod
Voopoo branding on the PnP X Pod

The PnP X pods are manufactured out of opaque black lightweight PCTG material with a Zinc Alloy rotatable top airflow cap. This tint is very subtle making the level of e-liquid visible even in poor light conditions. The PnP X pod is circular and measures 26mm (Diameter) x 43mm (Height) including the wide bore drip tip.

Branding on the top cap of the silver PnP X pod

This wide bore mouthpiece is fully integrated into the pod’s top cap so is not replaceable, but despite this the mouthpiece is very good and resembles a standard wide bore 810 drip tip. The only caveat to this is the MTL PnP X pod does have a removable drip tip.

PnP X Pod different angle view 1
PnP X Pod different angle view 2
PnP X Pod different angle view 3

The Zinc Alloy top cap on the PnP X pod sits flush around the diameter of the e-liquid reservoir and has two rectangular airflow slots. Adjustment of the airflow is carried out by rotating the cap and aligning the openings in the top cap with the cut-outs in the pod casing.

Knurling on the top outside edge of the rotating airflow top ring gives increased finger grip when turning the top section.

PnP X pod with the silicone fill port stopper open to expose the fill hole

E-liquid capacity is a very impressive 5ml (2ml TPD variant) and has a pretty large filling port (6mm) on the side of the pod that’s hidden when inserted into the Drag S2 and Drag X2. The fill port opening is concealed by a black silicone rubber flap and when filling is required, is simply unplugged then reinserted when filling is complete.

This silicone rubber flap sits flush against the side of the pod so it can be inserted into the Drag pod recess. If it’s not seated correctly it won’t fit into the mod. The rubber flap opens from the bottom of the pod side as indicated by the little arrow indented on the rubber flap. The other end is connected to the pod and remains attached so it doesn’t get misplaced.

4 magnets on base of the PnP X pod and the finger access to the coil

At the base of the PnP X pod are four circular magnets that do a very good job of holding the pod in place when fitted to the Drag S2 and Drag X2. Just above and below this coil opening, as shown in the photo above, is a curved recessed that is below the pod base which gives finger access to aid removing the coil.

Incorrect position of the PnP X coil in the base of the PnP X pod
Incorrect Alignment of Coil
Correct position of the PnP X coil in the base of the PnP X pod
Correct Alignment of Coil

Important: There are two flat sides in the coil opening (opposite sides to the indented finger access point). The PnP X coils also have two flat sides on the base plate of the coil. It is imperative that these flat sides line up with the flat sides in the base of the pod so when the coil is fitted, the base plate of the coil sits flush against the base of the pod.

Branding around the top cap of the PnP X Pod

Branding on the PnP X pod is very subtle; the outer diameter of the Zinc Alloy top cap has “Voopoo” and “PnP X” etched into the alloy. On the top are the words “Compatible with PnP X Coils” and “PnP X Cartridge DTL”.

3 different PnP X coils; 0.15, 0.2 and 0.3 ohm
front, top and bottom views of the PnP X coils

Currently there are 4 different PnP X coils available; 0.15 ohm, 0.2 ohm, 0.3 ohm and 0.6 ohm. The Drag S2 kit comes supplied with the 0.2 ohm and 0.3 ohm coils and the Drag X2 comes supplied with the 0.15 ohm and 0.3 ohm coils.

Voopoo Drag S2 and Drag X2 Pod Mod Functionality

The Voopoo Drag S2 and Drag X2 are identical in the way they operate and the way the information is displayed on the 0.96inch TFT colored display. The only difference between the two devices is the Drag S2 uses an internal rechargeable battery and has a maximum power level of 60W while the Drag X2 uses an external 18650 battery and goes up to a maximum power level of 80W.

Mode menu on the Drag X2

They are a both variable wattage pod mods with 3 different modes of operation; “Smart” coil detection which auto-selects the optimum wattage for the coil you’re using, “RBA” which allows you to adjust the wattage over the min/max power levels that the Drag S2 and Drag X2 can deliver and “Eco” which conserves the battery power level.

In addition to this, you can also “Lock/Unlock” the + and – control buttons and fire button plus reset/clear the “Puff” counter.

Accessing these functions are carried out using a combination of the fire button and the + and – buttons with the 0.96 inch TFT display highlighting these changes.

A Quick Start Guide of the functions are:

  • Fire button pressed 5 times: Turns the device On or Off
  • Fire button and + button together: Lock/Unlock the control buttons
  • + and – button together: Enters the Menu setting
  • + button will increase the wattage in 1W steps
  • – button will decrease the wattage in 1W steps

Holding down either the + or – buttons will alter the wattage value quicker. There is no round robin on the buttons so once it reaches the maximum or minimum value you will have to use the other button to change the value.

Max Power icon on the Drag X2

When the maximum wattage is reached (S2=60W, X2=80W) in RBA mode, the display will show “Max Power”. If you’re in SMART mode, “Max Power” will be displayed when you reach the maximum recommended wattage for the particular coil you’re using.

  • 0.15 ohm: 80W
  • 0.20 ohm: 60W
  • 0.30 ohm: 40W

Included on the 0.96 inch TFT display screen is all of the read-out information as follows:

Safety protections of the Drag S2 and Drag X2 are:

  • Overtime protection
  • Output over current protection
  • Low battery protection
  • Over temperature protection
  • Overcharge protection
  • Atomizer short-circuit protection

Start-Up: Turning the Drag S2 and Drag X2 pod mod on/off is carried out by pressing the fire button 5 times in quick succession. When turning on, the screen will display “Voopoo”, then “JUST DRAG” and then the control chip version “GENE.TT V2.0”. After this the main display screen will be shown for approximately 30 seconds and then extinguish.

When turning off, press the fire button 5 times in quick succession and the Drag S2 and Drag X2 will display “OFF” and then shut down.

During normal use, after the fire button or the + / – buttons have been pressed, the display will remain illuminated at full brightness for 15 seconds. After this time, the display will dim to half-light for another 15 seconds and then extinguish until a button is pressed again.

There is also a Standby or Sleep mode which we have observed on a few of Voopoo other devices too. If no buttons are pressed on the Drag S2 and Drag X2 within a 30 minutes period, it goes into sleep mode. When pressing the fire button after this period of time, although the display will illuminate, it will NOT fire the device. In order to vape, the fire button will have to be pressed again.

Top Airflow port on the PnP X Pod

Variable airflow on the Drag S2 and Drag X2 is carried out by rotating the Zinc Alloy top cap on the pod while it’s in situ in the pod recess to open or close the dual rectangular airflow slots. The resistance of this airflow ring is quite tight so you will have to hold the pod while you adjust the airflow otherwise the pod will rotate on the pod magnets in the pod recess.

Overview of Modes

To give a little insight to what the 3 different mode options mean, we’ve included a brief description below:

Smart Mode

Drag X2 auto set to 65W using the 0.15 ohm PnP X coil and 50W using the 0.2 ohm PnP X coil

Smart mode will auto-detect the type of coil fitted, register the coil resistance and set the optimum wattage for that coil. This is only a guide as you can adjust the wattage up or down using the + / – control buttons. What the Smart mode does though is limit the maximum wattage you can go up to depending on the coil type you’re using.

You won’t be able to increase the wattage beyond the maximum wattage specified for the type of coil that’s in the pod. In the case of the different PnP X coils, the maximum wattage available before the display indicates “MAX POWER” is:

  • 0.15 ohm: Auto detect = 65W. Max wattage = 80W
  • 0.20 ohm: Auto detect = 50W. Max wattage = 60W
  • 0.30 ohm: Auto detect = 35W. Max wattage = 40W
  • 0.60 ohm: Auto detect = 20W. Max wattage = 23W (Note)

Note: I’m assuming the auto detect for the 0.60 ohm coil is 20W but I couldn’t verify this as we didn’t have the coil to try.

This is an ideal setting for those people who are unsure what wattage value they should be using to vape at. One word of caution though, the auto detected optimum wattage level for each coil type, certainly for my vaping style is quite high.

In all cases, I would recommend setting your wattage to its lowest value and taking a draw. Increase the wattage level by a couple of watts each time until you find your sweet stop that gives you your ideal vape.

Lowest wattage set on the Drag X2 at 5W

When you select Smart mode, the main screen headings on the display i.e. Battery Icon, Mode, Puff, Time and the smaller symbols against the numerical values, turn Yellow.

RBA Mode

RBA mode is basically the standard power (variable wattage) mode. In this mode you are able to adjust the wattage level for any coil you’re using between the minimum and maximum wattage levels that the Drag S2 and Drag X2 are capable of providing.

RBA mode screen on the Drag X2

When you select RBA mode, the main screen headings on the display i.e. Battery Icon, Mode, Puff, Time and the smaller symbols against the numerical values, turn Blue.

Eco Mode

Eco mode will conserve battery power enabling you to achieve more vaping time (10%+) from a single charge. When this mode is selected, the brightness of the screen will reduce and the screen headings on the display i.e. Battery Icon, Mode, Puff, Time and the smaller symbols against the numerical values, turn Green.

This covers the functionality and what the Drag S2 and Drag X2 are capable of doing. The menu structure is very intuitive and easy to navigate though and once you’ve familiarized yourself with the options, it’s very easy to use.

The 0.96 inch TFT screen is bright, crisp and the detailed information is clearly visible. The main numerical wattage reading is nice and large and very easy to see.

Voopoo Drag S2 and Drag X2 PnP X Pod Performance

0.15 ohm, 0.3 ohm and 0.2 ohm PnP X coils

3 different PnP X coils are supplied with the Drag S2 and Drag X2 pod mod kits. The Drag S2 includes the 0.2 ohm and 0.3 ohm coils, while the Drag X2 includes the 0.15 ohm and 0.3 ohm coils. There is a 0.6 ohm PnP X coil but we don’t have that one here to review as it comes with the MTL PnP X Pod.

0.15 ohm, 0.3 ohm and 0.2 ohm PnP X coils showing the mesh from the top of the coils

Each of the PnP X coils has the coil resistance and the minimum and maximum recommended wattage range stamped on the coil casing. Voopoo claim that each coil is able to sustain a minimum 100ml of e-liquid cycled through the coil and provides 4 times more vaping pleasure than other coils.

Front, bottom and top of the PnP X Coils

All of the PnP X mesh coils are a push fit type, use Thermo-Stable cotton as the wicking material and have a patented 4-layer leak-proof design. Each of the coils have 4 sealing O-Rings that are color coded for each resistance type and really do provide a very good seal.

As we mentioned earlier, these PnP X coils are new and are only compatible with the PnP X cartridge (pod).

Even though I’ve included what each of the coil’s wattage values are set to in Smart mode, I always bed my coils in initially at well below the minimum recommended wattage levels so not to stress the coils too quickly.

I also find with these new PnP X coils and for that matter with the other coils in the PnP series, they perform great at well below the minimum wattage specified for each coil type.

PnP X 0.15 ohm Mesh Coil – Black O-Rings

0.15 ohm mesh PnP X coil

Voopoo state the recommended wattage for the coil is between 60W-80W and it provides a DTL vaping style. Recommended e-liquid through this coil is 50%-70% VG.

When using your device in Smart mode, the wattage of this coil is automatically set at 65W on the Drag X2. Note: If you use the 0.15 ohm coil in the Drag S2, the wattage will be set at 60W which is the maximum the Drag S2 will go up to.

Setting the wattage to the minimum 5W to initially bed the coil in did produce good flavor and a reasonable amount of vapor when doing a long slow draw. Considering the minimum recommended wattage of 60W for this coil I was surprised anything happened at 5W.

Increasing the wattage to 10W improved the intensity of the vape but when increased to 15W the flavor and vapor started to kick in nicely.

Turning it up to 20W, 1/3rd of the minimum recommended gave great results with the flavor really shining through and lots of vapor. 30W just further increased everything and I only needed a short draw. 40W and above just gets insane with huge amounts of vapor and the draw does start to get warm.

The minimum 60W and Smart setting of 65W was way too intense for me but really does kick out masses of vapor.

My ideal wattage for this coil was around the 20W-25W with the airflow open.

PnP X 0.2 ohm Mesh Coil – Black O-Rings

0.2 ohm mesh PnP X coil

Voopoo state the recommended wattage for the coil is between 40W-60W and it provides a DTL vaping style. Recommended e-liquid through this coil is 50%-70% VG.

When using your device in Smart mode, the wattage of this coil is automatically set at 50W.

Flavor and vapor came through at the lowest wattage that the Drag S2 and Drag X2 provides. I can say that at 5W with the airflow open and a slow 4 second draw the flavor was really good and the vapor was pretty dense.

Increasing the wattage to 10W produced great flavor and very dense clouds of vapor. Taking the wattage up to 20W, half the minimum recommended for this coil gave me fantastic results for flavor and vapor. Increasing it further to the minimum recommended for the coil (40W) was insane and I only needed a short 1 second draw.

The 50W Smart auto set up for me really was too intense. My ideal wattage for this coil was around the 15W with the airflow open.

PnP X 0.3 ohm Mesh Coil – Red O-Rings

0.3 ohm mesh PnP X coil

Voopoo state the recommended wattage for the coil is between 32W-40W and it provides a RDL and MTL vaping style. Recommended e-liquid through this coil is 50%-70% VG.

When using your device in Smart mode, the wattage of this coil is automatically set at 35W.

Flavor and vapor came through at the lowest wattage that the Drag S2 and Drag X2 provides. At 5W with the airflow open and a slow draw the flavor was really good and the vapor was quite dense. I did alter the airflow to just off the closed position and I do feel that achieving a tight MTL vaping draw is not possible.

Increasing the wattage to 10W produced great flavor and very dense clouds of vapor. Taking the wattage up to 15W and then 20W gave me fantastic results for flavor and vapor. Increasing it further to the minimum recommended for the coil (32W) and the Smart coil detect at 35W did increase the intensity of the draw but I felt it was not needed.

The 35W Smart auto set up for me again really was too intense. My ideal wattage for this coil was around the 12W with the airflow half open.

PnP X 0.6 ohm Mesh Coil – Blue O-Rings

We’ve included the 0.6 ohm coil limits for reference only as we didn’t have the coil to review.

Voopoo state the recommended wattage for the coil is between 18W-23W and it provides a RDL and MTL vaping style. Recommended e-liquid through this coil is 50%VG.

Because I didn’t have this coil to try, I couldn’t verify what the wattage is auto set to in Smart mode.

Drag S2 and Drag X2 PnP X Pod/Coil Summary

Performance, flavor and vapor on all 3 of the PnP X coils are REALLY IMPRESSIVE. I’ve always been impressed by the PnP range of coils that I’ve used for the last few years as they give great results and are some of the best coils available in the market today.

Fast forward to these new PnP X coils and their performance is on another level. If you like the PnP coils, you WILL love these PnP X coils!

Both the Drag X2 and Drag S2 set to 30W in the SMART and RBA setting

As will all the PnP coils I’ve used and these new PnP X coils are no different, I prefer vaping well below the minimum recommended wattage for each individual coil. Because of this reason, I tended to not use SMART mode as the auto wattage for each coil is set too high for my preferred style of vaping.

Airflow adjustment is very good and the myth that top airflow can limit flavor performance certainly doesn’t come into play with the PnP X pod. Airflow open lets in lots of air and when closed it shuts off the airflow completely with the flavor being immense irrespective of the airflow setting. The only thing to note is you do have to hold the pod when making airflow adjustments otherwise the pod spins in the pod recess.

No e-liquid seepage was evident other than very slight condensation on the base of the pod. As I’ve mentioned in a couple other reviews, if you’re not using your device for longer than a day I WOULD remove the pod from the mod/battery as e-liquid seepage may occur.

Longevity of the PnP X coils are a little unknown at present as I’ve only been using them for the last 3-4 weeks but can report that flavor and vapor has not deteriorated at all yet.

Voopoo Drag S2 and Drag X2 Pod Mod Battery Performance

Because we’re writing about two different devices, battery performance is a little bit tricky. Bear in mind the Drag S2 has an internal 2500mAh capacity battery while the Drag X2 uses an external 18650 battery.

Obviously the length of vape time between charges is very subjective and depends on several factors:

  • Your vaping style
  • Type of coil you’re using
  • Capacity of your battery (mAh)
  • Age and condition of your battery
  • Power level (wattage) you vape at
Drag S2 held in hand with the TFT display illuminated

I will mainly focus on the Drag S2 as the battery is at least fixed at 2500mAh. Any capacity battery, within reason, can be used in the Drag X2 and long as you ensure the Continuous Discharge Rating (CDR) of the battery you’re using is capable of providing the current for the wattage you’re vaping at.

If you want to try different capacity batteries, you can use our Battery Amp Drain Calculator to determine the most suitable batteries for your vaping requirements. If you’re unsure what batteries are available and best suited for this pod mod, take a look at our Best 18650 Battery Guide.

Battery Icon in the top right corner of the Drag S2 display with the remaining battery percentage to its side

Irrespective of which device you’re using, the battery display icon in the top right corner of the display gives a real time status of the remaining battery charge. It also includes a percentage value of the remaining charge. As the battery discharges, the colored battery icon will slowly reduce in size and the percentage value will count down.

Once the battery is nearing its discharge condition, the colored battery icon will disappear and a message “Check Battery” will be displayed when the Drag S2 and Drag X2 requires charging. At this point you will have to recharge your battery (Drag S2) or swap out for another fully charged battery (Drag X2) as we’ve detailed in “How do I Charge the Drag S2 and Drag X2” section in this review.

Interestingly, when the battery percentage value approached 5% remaining on the Drag S2, the “Check Battery” prompt appeared and I had to recharge once it reached 3%. On the Drag X2, as the battery percentage approached 10% remaining the “Low Power” prompt came up. I reduced the wattage and got a little more vape time until the remaining battery charge reached 3% and I had to swap it out for a new battery.

While using the Drag S2 with the 0.2 ohm coil set to 18W, I was achieving on average 11 hours vaping from a fully charged battery. The puff count recorded on the TFT display showed 158 puffs.

Unfortunately neither the Drag S2 nor the Drag X2 has pass-thru vaping so you won’t be able to vape while it’s being charged.

The intensity of the vape remained the same throughout the discharge cycle of the battery, only stopping once the low battery cut-off was reached.

How do I Fill the Voopoo PnP X Pod?

PnP X pod removed from the Drag X2

The PnP X pod incorporates a concealed side fill port so the pod will have to be removed from the pod recess of the Drag S2 and Drag X2 to gain access to this port.

Close up view of the fill port opening on the PnP X pod

Once removed, you will see the black silicone rubber flap on the side of the pod. Gently pull this flap open from the bottom end of the rubber stopper as shown by the little directional arrow. There is also a small fingernail slot between the rubber flap and the base edge of the pod which aids removal for those with no fingernails.

Filling the PnP X pod with E-liquid

Place your e-liquid bottle tip into this 6mm oval opening and fill with e liquid. To get the maximum amount of e-liquid into the pod you will have to tilt the pod on its side.

Once complete, replace the black silicone rubber flap ensuring it’s securely fitted and re-insert the pod back into the Drag S2 and Drag X2 pod recess.

Note: After multiple fillings of the PnP X Pod I’ve come to the conclusion that it is always best to fully close the airflow when filling to stop e-liquid seeping out from the airflow port when it’s on its side. Quite a few times with the airflow open while filling I’ve got e-liquid on my fingers from the airflow opening, with it closed off this doesn’t happen.

Quick Tip: If you are filling the tank for the first time, drip a few drops of e liquid onto the wicking ports of the coil first. Push the coil into the tank then fill the tank and leave to stand for approx. 10-15 minutes before you start to vape. Also keep the wattage low initially and take a few draws to pull e-liquid through the coil. Slowly increase the wattage in small steps, each time taking a few draws until you reach your desired setting. This will help saturate the wick fully in e-liquid and prolong the life of your coil.

How do I Change the Coil in the PnP X Pod?

When the coil you’re using shows an “Atomizer Short” or “Check Atomizer” on the TFT display screen, or your e-liquid starts producing a burnt taste it’s time to replace your coil with a new one.

Coil inserted into the base of the PnP X pod
Coil being removed from the base of the PnP X pod

Remove the PnP X Pod from the Drag S2 and Drag X2 mod pod recess. Because the Voopoo coils are a push fit type, simply pull the old coil out from the bottom of the pod and replace with a new one.

Coil nearly out from the base of the PnP X pod
Coil fully out of the base of the PnP X pod

Do note if the pod has e-liquid in it while you’re removing the coil, e-liquid will spill from the pod. The best method to avoid this or to keep e-liquid spillage to a minimum is to hold the pod upside down (drip tip pointing downwards), place your finger tightly over the opening of the drip tip and then remove the coil.

Replace with a new coil while still holding your finger over the drip tip. Turn the pod the right way up and take your finger off the drip tip.

Fill the pod up with your e-liquid using the procedure outlined in How Do I Fill The PnP X Pod?

Do ensure that your new coil is primed and when filled, left to stand for 15 minutes so the e-liquid fully saturates the wick. See our guide on Prolonging the Life of your Coil.

I would recommend when first using a new coil to lower the wattage for the first few draws and slowly increase the wattage in increments, taking a few draws at each level until you reach the wattage your happy with. This will help to bed the new coil in preventing premature ageing.

How do I Charge the Voopoo Drag S2 and Drag X2?

Both the Drag S2 and Drag X2 have Type-C charging ports. Obviously the Drag S2, because of the internal battery, has to be charged using this port but you have the option with the Drag X2 to use the charging port or remove the battery and charge in an external charger (recommended).

When you first receive your Drag S2 it does come with a nominal charge but we recommend fully charging the device before you first use it. With the Drag X2, you will need to insert a fully charged 18650 battery.

Charging cable plugged into the Type-C port on the Drag S2

If charging via the Type-C USB port, plug the supplied charging cable into the USB port on the Drag S2 and Drag X2 and connect the other end into a suitable power source (typically 5V/2A). Do note if you use a lower current power source (1A) it will take a little longer for the battery to fully charge.

As you vape on either the Drag S2 or Drag X2, the colored battery icon at the top of the display will slowly decrease showing you the remaining charge left in the battery. Once the colored battery icon has completely disappeared the display will indicate “Check Battery” and you will no longer be able to vape. Once this happens you will need to recharge your battery.

Charging menu on the Drag S2

When you put the Drag S2 and Drag X2 on charge, the main display screen will illuminate. After approximately 5 seconds the display will switch to a battery charging screen showing a dotted circle with the real time percentage charge value of the battery inside. Underneath this is a moving data type icon that makes it look like power is going into the battery.

After approximately 10 seconds the screen brightness will dim to half brightness and a further 1 minute later the battery charging screen goes blank. At this point there is no visual indication that the battery is being charged. To see the charge status of your battery, you will have to press either the fire button or the +/- control buttons on the Drag S2 and Drag X2 to bring up the display. Unfortunately the screen will only stay illuminated for another 1 minute.

Full charge is achieved when the battery percentage value indicates 100%. The Drag S2 and Drag X2 do stop charging when full charge is reached but again there is no display indication that lets you know this unless you press a button.

Voopoo use this method of charging display on several of their mods as we’ve seen before. While it’s not a problem, I DO prefer to have a visual indication of the battery being charged throughout the charging cycle.

Unfortunately the Drag S2 and Drag X2 don’t have pass-thru so you will NOT be able to vape while it’s being charged.

Charging time from full discharge to full charge on the Drag S2 took approximately 1 hour when using a standard 5V/2.1A source. The Drag S2 body did remain cool to the touch while it was being charged.

Charging cable plugged into the Type-C port on the Drag X2 and showing the charging menu

I did charge the Drag X2 using the Type-C USB port and the charging displays are the same for the Drag S2. I was using an 18650 Samsung 30Q (20A/3000mAh) and the charging time took 72 minutes to reach full charge. I would have expected it to take a little longer to charge but then the battery I used was quite old so the mAh has probably reduced over time.

However, as with any external battery mod (Drag X2), we always recommend using a good reputable external charger to charge your battery rather than using the supplied cable and internal charge circuit.

This will help improve the cycle life of your battery and provide a safer charging environment. For further information on battery chargers, check out our Best 18650 Battery Charger post.

As with any vape device, ALWAYS charge the mod resting on a non-flammable surface and NEVER leave your mod unattended whilst charging.

Voopoo Drag S2 and Drag X2 Kit Price

The Drag S2 and Drag X2 have only just been released and a quick search revealed that they are both retailing around the £35 price mark. We did see a couple of sites offering these for as little as £27.

Considering the high quality of the pod mods and performance of the PnP X pod and coils that come with the kits, this is a very good price. Whether you’re after an internal or external battery option, these two new Drag S2 and Drag X2 devices are a perfect choice.

Voopoo Drag S2 and Drag X2 Kit Summary

Drag X2 in all its glory
Drag S2 in all its glory

Where do I start! Voopoo continue to produce very good pods, mods, tanks and coils at very reasonable prices and the Drag S2 and Drag X2 are up there with the best of them.

The original Drag S and Drag X pod mods set the benchmark for others to emulate when they first hit the vaping world. The Drag S2 and Drag X2, coupled with the new PnP X pod and PnP X coils will no doubt make these a sure winner and compliment their ever growing range of products.

Similar to their earlier Drag X/S and of course their Vinci and Vinci X pod mods, offering the end user the choice of the same pod mod with an internal or external battery version is priceless.

Drag X2 pod mod and PnP X Pod
Drag S2 pod mod and PnP X Pod

Both the Drag S2 and Drag X2 look the part, have a high-end quality feel to them and I think Voopoo took a slight risk with not sticking to their trusted range of PnP coils that they’ve used across many of their devices. Introducing the PnP X pod and PnP X coils with the updated Drag S2 and Drag X2 versions has definitely paid off.

If you’ve ever used the PnP coils in any other of their devices you will know how well they perform. These PnP X coils have taken the flavor and vapor performance to another level.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reviewing and using these two devices and will be using them in my daily rotation for a long time to come.

I Hope you enjoyed this review on the Voopoo Drag S2 and Drag X2 kits and found it helpful and useful. If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to leave us a comment below.

  1. With the Voopoo Drag S 2 is it better to wait until the battery is totally drained before charging, or is it okay to charge a partially drained battery? I just received my Voopoo Drag S 2 and worried this might decrease the battery life.

    1. Hi Gayle, most pods/mods with internal batteries come with a nominal charge as this is best practice for storing a battery when not in use. I recommend to fully charge the battery before you first use it. Charging your battery thereafter before it’s fully discharged or topping up the charge to less than 100% is also ok to do.
Hope you enjoy the S2, it’s a great pod mod.
