The Voopoo Drag X Plus is an improved upgrade from the earlier release of the very popular Drag X Pod. The Drag X Plus is similar in appearance but with some major differences.

The maximum output power has been increased from 80W to 100W. Its battery compartment has been enlarged to accept a single 21700 size battery but does come supplied with an 18650 adaptor for those wishing to use this size of battery. Control of the device has improved and now uses the latest GENE.FAN 2.0 chip set.

The major difference over the older Drag X is the change from Pod to Mod. Gone is the recessed pod housing, it now comes with a standard universal 510 connection making the Drag X Plus mod much more versatile.

Included in the Drag X Plus kit is the new TPP Pod Tank with a magnetic 510 adaptor. This really does give you the increased option of using the new TPP coils with the TPP pod tank, or the Voopoo PnP coils in the PnP pod. Alternatively if you wish, you can use any 510 threaded tank on the Drag X Plus too. Not only this, the TPP pod tank can be used on the earlier version of the Drag X, the Drag S, Drag Max and on the Argus and Argus Pro pod devices.

The Drag X Plus still combines the look and feel of the earlier version with the leather body and zinc alloy frame, and of course the enlarged branding on the side of the leather wrap. The TPP Pod Tank compliments the overall aesthetics of the Drag X Plus kit and is re-fillable (bottom fill), has a removable drip tip and twin adjustable airflow slots on the 510 adaptor.

Drag X Plus Front View

E-liquid capacity in the TPP Pod Tank is 5.5ml (standard) or 2ml (EU version). The 2ml version is the same size diameter as the standard version but is restricted with the use of a grey silicone rubber bung.

All of the parameters are easily viewed on the 0.96 inch TFT colored display with adjustable control of variable wattage, Smart Mode and RBA mode. There are no Temperature Control functions but I do understand that this option is available through software upgrade.

I would like to thank the guys at Voopoo for sending me the Voopoo Drag X Plus Kit for the purpose of this review. As always this review is completely unbiased and is my honest opinion based on my findings on the Voopoo Drag X Plus mod with the TPP Pod Tank.

Read on and find out what we thought of the Drag X Plus and the new TPP Pod Tank.

Voopoo Drag X Plus Mod Design and Appearance

Drag X Plus Battery Latch and Adaptor

The Voopoo Drag X Plus mod, being the newly released upgrade from the Drag X, is a single external battery mod providing up to 100W of power. Insertion of the battery is via the sliding lock latch compartment at the bottom of the mod and accepts a 21700 sized battery allowing for an increased current capacity. Voopoo provide with the Drag X Plus kit an 18650 battery adaptor for those wishing to use the smaller sized batteries.

Constructed out of zinc alloy and leather, its shape is tubular in design with one flat side where the controls and display are housed. The remaining tubular sides are inlaid with a colored leather covering into the zinc alloy frame. This leather covering has a very soft and tactile feel, similar to that of suede.

The size of the mod on its own is 88mm x 34mm x 28mm and it weighs in at 133grams. Considering it takes a 21700 sized battery, this makes this a very compact, lightweight and powerful mod/pod. The combined height of the mod and pod tank is 141mm.

Even though we always recommend charging any external battery in an external charger, there is a fast charge Type-C USB charging port located under the +/- (up/down) buttons, specified as 5V/2A.

Drag X Plus 5010 Connector

Unlike the previous version of the Drag X, the Drag X Plus now has a universal 510 threaded mounted tank connector with 4 cross-cut air slots and a spring loaded gold plated center pin. This 510 connector is very slightly raised from the zinc alloy frame which makes sure when the tank is secured it doesn’t scratch the alloy frame.

Ultra-fast firing speeds of 0.001 seconds is achieved by the GENE.FAN 2.0 chip set, which also ensures the multitude of safety features are maintained, such as:

  • Overtime protection
  • Output over current protection
  • Low battery protection
  • Max power protection
  • Over temperature protection
  • Overcharge protection
  • Atomizer short-circuit protection

All the controls and features are on the front flat side of the Drag X Plus. These controls include a 0.96inch TFT color display, a circular firing button which is slightly contoured for your finger or thumb to fit into, two smaller +/- (up/down) buttons and the Type-C USB fast charging/software update port.

There are 5 colors available in the Drag X Plus range:

  • Marsala
  • Prussian Blue
  • Sandy Brown
  • Smoky Grey
  • Classic

The one I received was the Prussian Blue which is seen in the photos throughout this review. The color change between the designs is limited to the leather inlay and not the zinc alloy frame.

Branding has always been a love or hate topic when talking about the Drag devices and this is no different. One side of the mod has the words “Voopoo” and the other side has the logo “Gene” and the words “Gene chip inside”. All are discreetly printed on the zinc alloy frame.

On the leather inlay are the words “Drag X Plus in really big typeface. Although this typeface is big, it does tend to blend in with the colored leather. Towards the top of the mod, above the large Drag X Plus logo, are the words “Drag” which is embossed into the alloy frame.

The TFT color changing display is very clear and clean and does indicate all of the parameters you will need, including:

  • Battery Status
  • Wattage
  • Puff Counter
  • Volts
  • Resistance
  • Puff Duration (seconds)

Two different modes of operation (Smart Modes) can be selected. SMART (S) where the wattage is automatically selected depending on the coil being used in the pod/tank and RBA (R) where you can adjust the wattage irrespective of the coil type throughout the 5W – 100W range.

Primarily the Drag X Plus is a variable wattage mod only although I believe that Temperature Control is available if you connect your device to the internet and download the latest software for the mod.

I have to say, I am really impressed with the look and feel of the new Drag X Plus and it’s certainly very well built and oozes quality. The fire button and +/- buttons have a very positive response with no indication of button rattle.

In my opinion, this upgrade to the Drag X Plus is definitely a winner in terms of its increased battery compartment size and the change from a pod housing to a 510 threaded connector. This makes the mod much more versatile without limiting its use to the already existing pnp coils and pod of the earlier version with the inclusion of the magnetic 510 adaptor that comes with the TPP pod tank.

Update 14/7/2021

Since writing this review we’ve become aware that the Drag X Plus mod doesn’t include a “Boost” circuit in its design. This means that its output voltage is limited to 4.2V, that of a fully charged battery.

The lack of this “Boost” circuit will become apparent when the voltage of your battery reaches its cut-off voltage (3.2V). The maximum voltage that can be provided to power the tank/pod/coil that’s fitted will be the voltage of your battery minus any battery sag and connector losses.

This voltage equates directly to power (wattage), therefore, if you’re vaping with a nearly discharged battery and your wattage setting is pretty high, the Drag X Plus will NOT be able to provide the maximum wattage or the wattage that you’ve set. This becomes more apparent when vaping at high wattage with a low ohm coil.

While this is not ideal, there are a lot of mods/pods that don’t have “Boost” circuits. Under normal usage, this really isn’t an issue. Depending on the wattage you’re vaping at, you may find that just before your battery cuts off (low voltage) your vape may not be as intense. Changing the battery out for a fully charged battery will rectify this.

Voopoo have taking this issue on board and have just released the updated Drag X Plus Professional Edition which now includes a “Boost” circuit to increase the output volltage to 8.5V . We have just completed a review of that device and can clarify that the “Boost” circuit does work.

Take a look at our Drag X Plus Professional Edition Review and see what you think.

Voopoo TPP Pod Tank Design and Appearance

TPP Pod Tank, Drip Tip and 510 Adaptor

The new TPP Pod Tank is a revolutionary design comprising of 3 sections: a removable 810 drip tip, the bottom fill pod and a magnetic 510 adaptor. Overall diameter is 27mm and the height of the pod tank, including the 810 drip tip is 51.5mm.

Designed using a new airflow technology for increased flavor, the TPP pod tank accepts the new and bigger TPP mesh coils which are a push fit type that plug into the bottom of the pod. Variable airflow is provided by dual fully adjustable airflow slots on the 510 adaptor.

TPP Pod Tank with Coil Fitted

The airflow ring on the 510 magnetic adaptor has no end stops so will open and close continually as you move it around. It’s a very tight and secure fit so will not move once set to the position you require.

Adjustment of the airflow requires the user to grasp the knurled section at the top of the 510 adaptor and move the airflow ring as required. If you hold the pod while trying to adjust the airflow the pod will simply turn on the magnetic base of the 510 adaptor as that has less resistance than the airflow ring.

E-liquid capacity is a very impressive 5.5ml (2ml EU variant) and there’s a pretty large filling port at the base of the pod. A black silicon rubber flap is connected to the pod and when required to fill, is simply unplugged then re-inserted when filling is completed.

The pod tank is manufactured using stainless steel and semi-opaque black lightweight PCTG material. 3 color options are currently available, Silver, Black and Gunmetal.

A wide bore round 810 mouth-piece is a push fit type with double O-rings which locate into the stainless steel top cap.

Three strong magnets do a very good job of holding the pod securely in place when fitted to the Drag range or the Argus range of pod mods or either the 510 adaptor when using with the Drag X Plus or any other mod.

Removing the pod requires a strong grasp of the pod body and pulling away from the 510 adaptor. I did find it easier to slightly lever the pod to one side releasing one of the magnets, then pulling the pod away.

As always, I would opt for the larger 5.5ml pod version simply to negate the need for filling up as frequently. The TPP pod tank really is very versatile. It can be used on the Voopoo range of pods i.e. the Drag and Argus range of pods as a pod, or with the supplied magnetic 510 adaptor on any 510 connected mod.

Voopoo Drag X Plus Mod Functionality

The Voopoo Drag X Plus Mod is very straightforward to use and is a Variable Wattage (VW) device. Straight out of the box there are two modes of operation, Smart Mode and RBA Mode which we will discuss a little later.

For those wishing to use the device in Temperature Control (TC) mode, you will have to do a software upgrade via the Type-C USB port to activate this option.

I will mention that as I don’t often use TC, I didn’t bother to try this so can’t comment on the feasibility or operation of the TC mode.

All of the set parameters are shown on the 0.96 inch colored TFT display. These include:

Drag X Plus Display
  • Battery status
  • Wattage display (set by the +/-button)
  • Mode of operation (R or S)
  • Lock and unlock of the fire and +/- button.
  • Resistance of the fitted coil
  • Voltage applied to the coil
  • Puff counter
  • Puff (firing) time
  • A graphical display of amount of vaping

The color TFT display really is very impressive. Everything you wish to know is very clearly displayed and very crisp. The use of color on parts of the display really does make all the parameters stand out.

Drag X Plus Core Theme

There are two different screen layouts that you can choose to display, these being the “Iron Theme” or the “Core Theme”. The Iron Theme is the standard portrait display and the Core Theme will alter the display to a landscape (sideways) futuristic image.

Switching between these two user themes is carried out by holding both the +/- buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds. The theme options will then be displayed and are selectable. Use the + or – button to select the layout you want. The icon selected will be highlighted with two small brackets. Once selected, holding the fire button for a few seconds will display that screen layout.

To gain access to the menu options, the controls are carried out by the firing button and the two +/- buttons as follows:

  • Fire button pressed – Start vaping
  • – button pressed – Wattage down
  • + button pressed – Wattage up
  • Fire button pressed 5 times – Power on/off
  • Fire button pressed 3 times – Switches between S/R modes
  • Fire and – button – Puff counter reset/data cleared
  • Fire and + button – Device lock/unlocked
  • + and – button – Display theme

Wattage is variable from 5W through to 100W in 1W increments. Holding either the up or down button, will cycle through the wattage quicker. Increasing the wattage to its maximum (100W) will display a “Max Power” and coil icon.

Sleep Mode

While using this device, I observed that the Drag X Plus will go into “Sleep Mode” after approx. 30 minutes of inactivity. When pressing the fire button after this period of time, although illuminating the display, will NOT fire the device. In order to vape, the fire button will have to be pressed again.

This is something that I’ve not observed before nor come across in any written documentation about the device. Equally I’ve not observed this condition on other Voopoo devices.

As my intrigue got the better of me, I tried this on my Voopoo Argus Pro pod mod to see if it did the same. Low and behold, that went into “Sleep” mode too. Having reviewed the Argus Pro 80W Pod Mod late last year, I failed to pick this up then.

So there we have it, inactivity of 30 minutes will put the device into “Sleep” mode and requires the fire button to be pressed twice, once to activate it then again to vape.

The two different modes of operation on the Drag X Plus in terms of S/R are as follows:

S (Smart) Mode

Automatically selects the optimum wattage depending on the coil type that’s fitted and won’t allow you to increase the wattage beyond that specified by the coil. The user can reduce the wattage all the way down to 5W if desired but increasing the wattage in this mode will only go as high as that particular coil’s maximum limit.

This is an ideal mode for new vapers who are not familiar with the correct wattages to adjust for a given coil type. When S mode is selected, the display will turn yellow and the S icon will be displayed.

One word of warning, the optimum wattage for each coil type, certainly for my vaping style is too high so be warned! See my description and performance of the two coils in the TPP Pod Tank Performance section below.

R (RBA) Mode

Normal power mode, meaning you can adjust the wattage within the 5W – 100W range irrespective of the coil that’s fitted. When R mode is selected, the display will turn blue and the R icon will be displayed.

Voopoo TPP Pod Tank Performance

Supplied with the Drag X Plus kit come the TPP DM1 and DM2 mesh coils. These coils are bigger than the standard pnp coils but you can see they have a greater surface area and the wicking ports are much larger.

TPP Pod Tank and Coils

TPP DM1 Coil (0.15 ohm)

Voopoo state the recommended wattage for the coil is between 60W-80W, best between 65W-75W.

Before I jump into setting the wattage near the minimum recommended, I will say I was really surprised when i tried the Voopoo PnP coils during the review I did on the Argus Pro. Those coils were fantastic. The recommended wattage was similar to these TPP coils and my first vape nearly took my head off!

I do prefer a long slow draw and I found that the minimum recommended wattage was way to high for my normal style of vaping. The PnP coils performed amazingly at such low wattage. Bearing this in mind, I will start of low and see what happens.

After priming the coil and leaving to stand for 15 minutes, I filled up the pod tank with my usual 6mg 50PG/50VG Thug Juice.

Being cautious, I set the wattage to 8W to ease the coil in for a few puffs. As I anticipated, the flavor and vapor, although not great, was coming through. Increasing the wattage in increments to 15W , the flavor and vapor really started to kick in.

Increasing the wattage to 20W really improved the flavor and the throat hit was really good. Vapor production at this wattage was really impressive. Dialing up the wattage to 30W and above just got more and more intense. I took the wattage all the way up to 70W to see what happened and as expected, I couldn’t see anything for the thick dense clouds of vapor.

I cycled a high VG juice (Mango) through the pod at 70W and the coil performed perfectly. No dry hits or burnt taste. The flavor was really crisp, slightly warm and with intense vapor clouds.

Overall, I’m really impressed with the flavor and vapor from this coil and have been using it constantly for the last two weeks with no loss of performance. My optimum wattage that suited my vaping style was 20W with the airflow ¾ open.

TPP DM2 Coil (0.2ohm)

Voopoo state the recommended wattage for the coil is between 40W-60W, best between 50W-55W.

Using both my 50/50 and high VG juices, I found the flavor and vapor kicked in at around the 12W level. Increasing the wattage in increments up to 50W again gave me a more intense vaping style. Yes the flavor and vapor being produced was incredible but to be honest I found my ideal wattage setting for this coil to be 15W.

Coil Summary

TPP DM Coil Mesh View

I have to conclude that I didn’t really notice any differences between the two coils other than the DM2 coil produced roughly the same results but at a slightly lower wattage.

The performance was on par with the pnp coils I’ve previously tried in my other Voopoo devices so was very pleased to find that these TPP coils are equally as good.

Both the PnP and TPP coils really are some of the best performing coils I come across. To achieve such good flavor and vapor at incredible low wattage, yet perform just as good if not better at high wattage is very impressive.

I didn’t observe any leakage into the 510 adaptor while using either coil other than a slight condensation on the magnetic plate.

Voopoo Drag X Plus Mod Battery Performance

Drag X Plus 18650/21700 Battery

The Voopoo Drag X Plus can be powered by an external 18650 or 21700 battery.

Battery performance is always subjective and depends on the type of battery you use, the power you vape at and your vaping style, also not forgetting either the condition of your battery.

Because I was vaping around 20W, I opted to use my Sony 18650 VTC5A battery, having a CDR value of 25A with a 2500mAh capacity.

I was achieving around 8hrs vaping from the fully charged battery. Using my Molicel P42A battery (30A/4200mAh), I was getting a good day’s vaping before I needed to re-charge.

If you want to try different batteries, you can use our Battery Amp Drain Calculator to determine the most suitable batteries for your vaping requirements.

Update 14/7/2021

Because the Drag x Plus doesn’t have a “Boost” circuit, be aware that once your battery begins to reach its low voltage cut off (3.2V), the wattage you’ve set may not be obtained. It will throttle back and only provide the wattage that is depicted by the battery voltage.

Take a look at our Drag X Plus Professional Edition Review. Voopoo have released this updated version to now include an on-board “Boost” circuit.

How do I Fill the Voopoo TPP Pod Tank?

The design of the pod tank is such that you’ll have to remove it from the 510 adaptor to fill with e-liquid. Simply grasp the pod section of the pod tank and pull away from the 510 adaptor. The pod tank and 510 adaptor are held together by 3 magnets so a little pressure is needed to release the two sections.

The fill port is located on the base of the pod and is concealed behind a silicon rubber flap.

Pull open the flap and insert your e-liquid drip tip into the opening. Once filled, re-insert the silicon rubber flap making sure the fill port is re-seated.

Quick Tip: If you are filling the pod tank for the first time, drip a few drops of e liquid onto the wick of the coil first. Push the coil into the pod tank then fill with your e-liquid and leave to stand for approx. 10-15 minutes before you start to vape. This will help saturate the wick fully in e liquid and help prolong the life of your coil.

How do I Change the Coil in the Voopoo TPP Pod Tank?

Changing the coil in the TPP pod tank is really straight forward.

Remove the TPP pod from the 510 adaptor and flip the pod over to gain access to the bottom of the pod. The coil design is a push fit (PnP) connection type with a single O-Ring just above the lip on the coil body. Because the coil has an increased lip size at the bottom of the coil, simply grasp the coil and pull outwards.

Be careful when removing the coil if you have a full pod of e-liquid as spillage will occur. Small amounts of e-liquid left in the pod when removing the coil will remain in the pod.

When re-inserting a new coil, simply push in the coil and then re-fit the pod into the 510 magnetic adaptor. As always when using a new coil, make sure you prime the coil first before using. Drop a few drops of e-liquid into the side wicking ports and down into the top of the coil. Once filled, leave the pod to stand for approximately 15 minutes to allow the e-liquid to fully saturate the wick in the coil.

Further reading on prolonging the life of your coil and how to prime a coil can be found in our guide How To Get The Most Out Of Your Vape Coil.

How do I Charge the Voopoo Drag X Plus Mod?

Using the supplied Type-C USB charging cable, plug the cable into the USB port on the Drag X Plus mod. Connect the other end into a suitable power source (typically 5V2A).

Drag X Plus On Charge

While charging, if the Drag X Plus is switched on, the battery icon in the top right hand corner of the display will display the scrolling battery icon showing that it’s being charged. Once fully charged, the battery icon will remain static.

If the Drag X Plus is NOT switched on, while charging, the battery icon will be displayed showing the percentage of charge. When fully charged, the battery percentage will show 100%.

The Drag X Plus does NOT have ‘Pass-Through’ mode meaning you won’t be able to charge your mod and vape at the same time. I don’t find this a problem as it’s so much easier to swap out the battery and continue vaping.

As with any vape device, NEVER leave your mod unattended whilst charging.

However, as with any external battery mod, we always recommend using a good reputable external charger to charge your battery rather than using the supplied cable and internal charge circuit.

This will help improve the cycle life of your battery and provide a safer charging environment. For further information on battery chargers, check out our Best 18650 Battery Charger post.

Voopoo Drag X Plus Kit Price

Expect to pay around £35 – £45 ($50) for the Drag X Plus kit.  Due to the versatility of the TPP pod tank and the inclusion of the magnetic 510 adaptor, this really is well worth the money.

Drag X Plus Review Verdict

Voopoo Drag X Plus Kit Summary

Simply put……I loved it. The Voopoo Drag X Plus mod kit with the TPP pod tank is really well built and a really well designed piece of kit. The mod itself looks really good, very compact, lightweight even when using a 21700 battery and its performance is very impressive.

In my opinion, the upgrade from pod to mod with the 510 connector is a hit. This makes it so much more usable with other tanks. Being able to use the PnP pod, with the 510 adaptor and the range of pnp coils from Voopoo’s other products is definitely a BIG plus for me.

The TPP coils are as good as the PnP coils and in my opinion are one of the best in the market today.

While not fully loaded with features, it didn’t matter, what it has worked perfectly. I would definitely recommend the Drag X Plus with the TPP pod tank for new vapers and experienced vapers alike.

Update 14/7/2021

As we’ve updated this review to mention that the Drag X Plus doesn’t include a “Boost” circuit, while this may be an issue to some vapers, we still believe that the Drag X Plus mod/pod kit is a worthy device and you shouldn’t let this put you off. I’ve been vaping on this kit for many months now with no problems at all.

If this is an issue for you, Voopoo have updated the Drag X Plus to now include a “Boost” circuit. This new update is called the Professional Edition.

Take a look at our Drag X Plus Professional Edition Review and see what you think.
