Voopoo Drag X Plus Professional Edition Review / With Added Boost Circuit to 8.5V

Richard WinterMods 2 Comments

Voopoo have just released the updated Drag X Plus Professional Edition mod. In a nutshell, it’s the same device as the Drag X Plus mod we reviewed earlier in the year but with one major difference.

The standard Drag X Plus sadly didn’t include a “Boost” circuit in its design meaning the maximum output voltage available to power the pod/tank/coil was 4.2V. While this wouldn’t affect normal vaping conditions, powering the device to its maximum wattage of 100W while using a rundown battery was not possible.

It has to be said that Voopoo really do listen and take on board the comments they receive. To this end, welcome the Drag X Plus Professional Edition mod with, yes, you’ve guessed it….. a “Boost” circuit. Instead of the output voltage being limited to 4.2V, the Boost circuitry now extends the maximum output voltage of the Professional Edition version to 8.5V.

This will allow the mod to be used at its maximum 100W and maintain the set power output (wattage) until the battery reaches its low cut-off voltage, typically 3.2V. No longer will the power throttle back with a nearly discharged battery.

We understand from Voopoo that this new release, the Drag X Plus Professional Edition also comes as part of the kit that includes the new TPP 2.0 pod. Sadly we didn’t receive the new TPP pod, only the mod, so can’t comment on its performance.

From pictures, it’s hard to see what the differences are between the two releases of TPP pods are. The specifications appear to be the same and it still uses the same TPP coils. The technical information on the TPP 2.0 states it has Anti-accumulation Condensation Tech and New Aluminum alloy Tech and Design with upgraded TPP coil structure. Will it perform better, hopefully it will!

Because we carried out a detailed review of the Voopoo Drag X Plus Kit recently, we will only cover the general information and not go into a detailed description other than the changes between the two versions. Also having only received the mod, we cannot comment on the new TPP 2.0 pod.

As the Drag X Plus Professional Edition mod is virtually identical to the Drag X Plus Kit Review, please go to that review for further detailed information on its functionality and performance.

I would like to thank Lucky at Voopoo for sending me the Voopoo Drag X Plus Professional Edition mod for the purpose of this review. As always this review is completely unbiased and is my honest opinion based on my findings on the Voopoo Drag X Plus Professional Edition mod.

Voopoo Drag X Plus Professional Edition Mod Design and Appearance

The Voopoo Drag X Plus Professional Edition mod has just been released as an upgrade to the newly released Drag X Plus.

As we mentioned in the overview earlier, the two mods are identical with the exception of the color options and the inclusion of a battery “Boost” circuit.

There are 5 colors available in the Drag X Plus Professional Edition range:

  • Black Black
  • Black Coffee
  • Silver Grey
  • Silver Retro Brown
  • Silver Blue

The leather finish on the wrap-around inlay has changed from the Drag X Plus which was a suede type leather finish to a tough wipeable leather hide that looks and feels like real leather. I have to say I do prefer the finish of the Professional Edition more. It looks like it will stand up to more punishment.

With regards to the “Boost” circuit, the Drag X Plus Professional Edition can now output a voltage between 3.2 – 8.5V.

This means that the maximum wattage of 100W can be maintained irrespective of the charge condition of your 18650/21700 battery.

When your battery starts to discharge, approaching its cut-off discharge state of approx. 3.2V, you will still be able to vape without the wattage throttling back. As such, the power level will be maintained and the vapor and flavor will not diminish until the battery cuts out.

Drag X Plus Professional Edition Battery Compartment
Drag X Plus Professional Edition with Battery

To give a brief overview of the design and appearance of the Drag X Plus Professional Edition, it’s a single external battery mod providing up to 100W of power. Insertion of the battery is via the sliding lock latch compartment at the bottom of the mod and accepts either an 18650 battery or a 21700 sized battery.

Voopoo provide with the Drag X Plus Professional Edition an 18650 battery adaptor for those wishing to use the smaller sized batteries.

Constructed out of zinc alloy and leather, its shape is tubular in design with one flat side where the controls and display are housed. The remaining tubular sides are inlaid with a colored leather covering into the zinc alloy frame. The bottom of the Drag X Plus Professional Edition has the sliding battery door and the top section of the mod houses the 510 connector.

The size of the mod on its own is 88mm x 34mm x 28mm and weighs in at 133grams. There is a fast charge Type-C USB charging port located under the +/- (up/down) buttons, specified as 5V/2A.

Ultra-fast firing speeds of 0.001 seconds is achieved by the GENE.FAN 2.0 chip set, which also ensures the multitude of safety features are maintained, such as:

  • Overtime protection
  • Output over current protection
  • Low battery protection
  • Max power protection
  • Over temperature protection
  • Overcharge protection
  • Atomizer short-circuit protection

All the controls and features are on the front flat side of the Drag X Plus Professional Edition mod. These controls include a 0.96inch TFT color display, a circular firing button, two smaller +/- (up/down) buttons and the Type-C USB fast charging/software update port.

Branding is exactly the same on the Professional Edition as it is on the Drag X Plus. I’m not sure if the general release of the upgraded mod will include branding to highlight it’s the Professional Edition mod?

The TFT color changing display again is identical to the Drag X Plus which indicates all of the parameters you will need, such as:

  • Battery Status
  • Wattage
  • Puff Counter
  • Volts
  • Resistance
  • Puff Duration (seconds)

Two different modes of operation (Smart Modes) are available. SMART (S) where the wattage is automatically selected depending on the coil being used in the pod/tank and RBA (R) where you can adjust the wattage irrespective of the coil type throughout the 5W – 100W range.

Voopoo Drag X Plus Professional Edition Mod Functionality

The Voopoo Drag X Plus Professional Edition Mod functions exactly the same as the Drag X Plus.

It’s a Variable Wattage (VW) device only but can be upgraded to Temperature Control (TC) mode via the Type-C USB port to activate this option.

All of the set parameters are shown on the 0.96 inch colored TFT display. These include:

  • Battery status
  • Wattage display (set by the +/-button)
  • Mode of operation (R or S)
  • Lock and unlock of the fire and +/- button.
  • Resistance of the fitted coil
  • Voltage applied to the coil
  • Puff counter
  • Puff (firing) time
  • A graphical display of amount of vaping

There are two different screen layouts that you can choose to display, these being the “Iron Theme” or the “Core Theme”. The Iron Theme is the standard portrait display and the Core Theme will alter the display to a landscape (sideways) futuristic image.

Switching between these two user themes is carried out by holding both the +/- buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds. The theme options will then be displayed and are selectable. Use the + or – button to select the layout you want. The icon selected will be highlighted with two small brackets. Once selected, holding the fire button for a few seconds will display that screen layout.

To gain access to the menu options, the controls are carried out by the firing button and the two +/- buttons as follows:

  • Fire button pressed                 –           Start vaping
  • – button pressed                      –           Wattage down
  • + button pressed                     –           Wattage up
  • Fire button pressed 5 times    –           Power on/off
  • Fire button pressed 3 times    –           Switches between S/R modes
  • Fire and – button                      –           Puff counter reset/Data clear
  • Fire and + button                     –           Device lock/unlocked
  • + and – button                                     Display theme

Wattage is variable from 5W through to 100W in 1W increments. Holding either the up or down button, will cycle through the wattage quicker. Increasing the wattage to its maximum (100W) will display a “Max Power” and coil icon.

Sleep Mode

The Drag X Plus Professional Edition will go into “Sleep Mode” after approx. 30 minutes of inactivity. When pressing the fire button after this period of time, although does illuminate the display, will NOT fire the device. In order to vape, the fire button will have to be pressed again.

The two different modes of operation on the Drag X Plus in terms of S/R are as follows:

S (Smart)

Automatically selects the optimum wattage depending on the coil type that’s fitted and won’t allow you to increase the wattage beyond that specified by the coil. The user can reduce the wattage all the way down to 5W if desired but increasing the wattage in this mode will only go as high as that particular coil’s maximum limit.

When “S” mode is selected, the display will turn yellow and the “S” icon will be displayed.

R (RBA)

Normal power mode, meaning you can adjust the wattage within the 5W – 100W range irrespective of the coil that’s fitted.

When “R” mode is selected, the display will turn blue and the “R” icon will be displayed.

Voopoo Drag X Plus Professional Edition Mod Battery Performance

The Voopoo Drag X Plus Professional Edition can be powered by an external 18650 or 21700 battery. Its performance was identical to that we observed on the Drag X Plus with obviously one exception.

The included “Boost” circuitry now means that the wattage you’ve set your mod to will remain constant throughout the discharge cycle of your battery. No longer will the intensity of your vape reduce as your battery approached its cut-off voltage (3.2V).

Unfortunately we didn’t have the new TPP 2.0 Pod to try but did use the older version to verify that the “Boost” circuit performed as it should do. With a nearly discharged battery and the wattage set to 70W, the flavor and vapor remained as intense as it did with a freshly charged battery and continued right up to the point when the battery fully discharged (Low Voltage Battery Cut-Off).

How do I Charge the Voopoo Drag X Plus Professional Edition Mod

Using the supplied Type-C USB charging cable, plug the cable into the USB port on the Drag X Plus Professional Edition mod. Connect the other end into a suitable power source (typically 5V2A).

However, as with any external battery mod, we always recommend using a good reputable external charger to charge your battery rather than using the supplied cable and internal charge circuit.

The Drag X Plus Professional Edition does NOT have a “Pass-Through” therefore you will not be able to charge your mod and vape at the same time.

As with any vape device, NEVER leave your mod unattended whilst charging.

Voopoo Drag X Plus Professional Edition Price

Because the Professional Edition version had not been released at the time of writing, we are unable to state how much either the mod on its own would cost or how much it will be as a kit form with the TPP 2.0 pod

Purchasing the mod on its own may be limited as I can imagine it will be sold in a kit along with the new TPP 2.0 Pod and 510 adaptor.

No doubt, once it hits the market all of the major websites will stock the device.

Voopoo Drag X Plus Professional Edition Summary

I can only say I loved the Drag X Plus when we reviewed it earlier in the year. Now Voopoo have upgraded it to the Professional Edition version, it’s even better.

While it didn’t bother us that the Drag X Plus didn’t have “Boost” circuitry, I know some vapers found it a negative and limiting factor. Voopoo have responded to the comments they received and took it on board to improve on the design and provide the Professional Edition to cater for this.

Having tried and tested the new design, the included “Boost” circuitry DOES work and functions correctly. The flavor and vapor no longer tails off when the battery is nearly discharged.

Well done Voopoo.

    1. Hi David, thank you for your question. The Drag X Plus Professional takes an external 18650/21700 battery therefore to ensure your batteries longevity I always recommend using a quality external charger. Have you tried charging the battery in an external charger or have you swapped the battery out with a new one to verify its NOT the battery that’s faulty?
If the battery is ok then it could either be a faulty charging cable so I would suggest trying another cable or the charging circuit in the Drag X Plus is no longer working.
