Yocan Zen Wax Vaporizer Review | Sleek and Stylish Dab Pen for Concentrates

Callumn WinterWax/Oil Pens Leave a Comment

In today’s review we’re taking a look at the very exciting Zen wax vaporizer, a brand new release from the guys and girls over at Yocan.

We actually had the pleasure of reviewing the Yocan Pillar E-Rig earlier this year and were blown away by the quality and design! If you’re unfamiliar with Yocan they’re a Chinese based company with years of experience in producing affordable, reliable vaporizers for use with dry herb or wax concentrates.

They’ve made it their mission to produce products that perform as well as the competition (sometimes even better!), for a fraction of the price. The Yocan Zen we’re reviewing today is no different, costing just $39.99; a truly budget friendly price!

As well as having a very reasonable price tag, the Zen also offers users an easy vaping experience with it’s simple and intuitive design. As well as this, it holds a 650mAh battery that should last the average vaper several sessions and features a C4-DE (Ceramic & Diatomaceous Earth) coil for rapid and efficient heating!

Whether you’re a veteran user looking for an affordable, portable wax pen, or a complete beginner looking to dip your toes in the water, the Yocan Zen might just be the perfect device for you! But, that’s enough for the introduction….time to put this thing to the test!

Read on to see what we discovered while using the Yocan Zen…

  • 1 x Pick Tool
  • 1 x Type-C USB Cable
  • 1 x Instruction Manual
  • 4 x Cotton Swabs

On the front of the box you’ll see an image of the Zen in the color option you’ve chosen and on the back and sides of the box there’s a ton of handy information. There’s also an authentication scratch code that lets you check the Yocan Zen you’ve purchased is the real deal!

Once you slide off the cardboard sleeve and open the box you’ll see the Zen, 1 C4-DE coil, a pick tool, a charging cable, 4 Q-Tips and an instruction manual. There’s also a second small manual that gives you instructions for authenticating your Zen vaporizer.

Overall the packaging on the Yocan Zen is excellent. It’s clear and informative and feels sturdy enough to protect any fragile components inside. The inclusion of a spare coil, dab tool and 4 Q-Tips is a nice touch and makes the Zen feel like a premium product before you’ve even taken your first hit!

Yocan Zen | Design & Build Quality

In terms of aesthetics the Zen is a cylindrical pen-style vaporizer, measuring just 121mm tall and a mere 14.2mm in width. The shape and small size make the Zen an extremely portable vaporizer and perfect for taking with you on the go!

Together with the light weight of 43.5g, the Yocan Zen feels super comfortable to hold and really easy to carry with you. This is also helped by the brushed Stainless Steel body, which feels silky and smooth to the touch!

Overall it’s a really comfortable device to hold and vape on. The slim profile means it’s easy to grip as well as being incredibly discreet. In fact, I’ve tried a dozen or so wax pens over the last few years and the Zen is easily one of the most discreet!

The brushed metal design is also matte, which gives the device a beautiful sheen when it catches the light. It’s available in 7 different colors (Black, Gun Metal, Silver, Green, Purple, Red, Blue) and all of them look fantastic!

We were lucky enough to receive the Gun Metal and Green options for this review and as you can see from the pictures, both colors work really well with the simple, understated design.

I’m happy to report that the paint job on the Zen also holds up really well. I stupidly dropped the Gun Metal one (after a fairly heavy session!) and there was no discernible damage to the body or paintwork.

Yocan Zen - Design and Build Quality 2

In terms of branding I also think Yocan have nailed it! There’s a small Zen logo on the front facing side near the bottom and a small Yocan logo on the reverse side. Other than that, the Zen has a clean, stylish design that gives it a really premium vibe!

Directly above the Zen logo on the front you’ll see a small rectangular firing button. Running around the edge of the button is the LED indicator. This lights up whenever you fire the device, change the temperature setting or turn the device on or off.

The LED is also used to display a number of different safety prompts:

  • Safety cut off – If the device is heated continuously for over 30 seconds the LED will flash white 5 times and then stop working.
  • No coil – The white LED flashes 3 times.
  • Short-circuit – The red LED flashes 5 times.
  • Low battery – The red LED flashes 10 times and then stops working.

The LED indicator also has three color options, depending on which temperature option is set:

  • White LED: 2.8V
  • Green LED: 3.2V
  • Red LED: 3.6V

To turn the device on or off you must quickly click the firing button 5 times and to change between the three preset temperatures you click the firing button 3 times repeatedly. Once your concentrate is loaded you simply hold down the firing button to heat the wax.

Overall it’s incredibly simple to operate and straightforward to use. In fact, one of the things I love most about the Yocan Zen is just how simple it is to use! Within only a minute of taking it out the box I was comfortable with how to use and operate it.

Yocan Zen - Design and Build Quality 5

Directly above the firing button and LED indicator you’ll see a shiny metal ring that runs around the body of the Zen. This silver ring not only functions as the magnetic base to hold the removeable mouthpiece, but also houses two small holes that provide airflow to the coil.

In terms of the airflow I was also really pleased. Although the two holes are incredibly small, they let a decent amount of airflow through to the coil. This means the Zen can be used in both mouth-to-lung (MTL) and direct-to-lung (DTL) vaping styles.

Personally I preferred taking long, deep DTL hits on the Yocan Zen because I think the airflow and mouthpiece are more suited to that style, but it’s nice that the design allows for both preferences.

My only slight gripe with the airflow is the whistling noise that accompanies each puff you take. It’s a minor inconvenience but it does get annoying after several puffs!

Yocan Zen - Design and Build Quality 6

Above the silver ring you’ll find the removeable mouthpiece which is super easy to remove and replace. I hate it when I see a wax vaporizer that uses 510 threading for the mouthpiece and I was glad to see Yocan opted for the magnetic attachment instead. This makes the device much easier to clean!

Unfortunately there’s no splash guard inside the mouthpiece but the part that you place your lips on tapers into an extremely small opening anyway. This makes the likelihood of wax residue spitting up unlikely.

The magnetic mouthpiece also makes it super easy to top up your concentrate during the middle of a session. Just be warned, the coil does get extremely hot during use!

At the other end of the device you’ll find the Type-C USB charge port, located on the bottom of the Zen. When the battery does run dry the LED flashes red 10 times in quick succession. To recharge it you simply plug in the supplied USB cable to a suitable outlet.

Yocan Zen - Design and Build Quality 7

Last but by no means least, I was also incredibly impressed with the design of the C4-DE coil. According to Yocan they’re made using advanced ceramic and food-grade diatomaceous earth. This helps the Zen deliver the most pure and flavorful vapor possible.

Yocan have also designed the C4-DE coil to heat up as quickly as possible. While ceramic coils generally take much longer to heat up, the C4-DE coil is designed to deliver the same great flavor you’d expect from a ceramic coil, without having to wait longer for it!

While I’ll talk more about the performance of the coil later on, I will just say that I was suitably impressed with both the flavor and vapor production on the Zen.

Yocan Zen - Design and Build Quality 8

Overall I was really surprised with the design and build quality of the Yocan Zen. The compact and lightweight design makes it an ideal vaporizer to use on the go and the stylish and sleek aesthetics mean it won’t stick out like a sore thumb.

It’s incredibly easy to setup and feels like a solid, well-built vaporizer. It’s clear that Yocan have put a great deal of time and effort into making a user-friendly device with a design that far exceeds the budget-friendly price tag!

Yocan Zen | How to Use

For a complete novice, using a wax vaporizer for the very first time can often feel a bit overwhelming. Even for an experienced user it often takes time to learn what works best with a new wax pen.

Luckily Yocan have made the Zen about as idiot-proof as possible, with virtually no controls or functions to learn or worry about. I had my Zen loaded up and ready to fire within about two minutes of opening the box!

Yocan Zen - How to use
Step 3 – Load your concentrates

Follow the brief steps outlined below and you’ll be taking huge rips from your Zen in no time at all:

  1. Turn the Zen on/off – Simply click the firing button 5 times within 2 seconds. The white LED will flash 5 times to let you know the device is on.
  2. Insert coil – If not already installed, thread the coil directly onto the battery.
  3. Load your concentrates into the C4-DE coil – Just be careful not to overfill the heating chamber. This can cause problems with cleaning and wastage. I found a reasonable amount of sticky wax concentrate worked best for me!
  4. Select your desired temperature – Scroll through the three preset temperature levels (2.8V / 3.2V / 3.6V) by clicking the power button 3 times within 2 seconds.
  5. Fire away – Hold the fire button down for several seconds until a sufficient amount of concentrate is vaporized. After this take a deep puff and enjoy!

Yocan Zen | Performance, Vapor & Flavor Quality

When it comes to the performance of the Yocan Zen I was actually pleasantly surprised. It’s important to remember it only costs $39.99 and it’s designed with an on-the-go vaper in mind. Despite that it still kicks out a great amount of flavor and vapor!

Obviously if you compare it with a wax vaporizer like the Utillian 5, a dab pen that’s designed to blow your socks off, the amount of vapor produced is considerably less! However, that isn’t to say the Zen doesn’t produce a good amount of vapor….quite the opposite.

Yocan Zen - Performance 1

On the medium (3.2V) and high (3.6V) heat settings the Zen actually kicks out a reasonable amount of thick, tasty vapor, and in record time too! While you won’t be disappearing in a cloud of smoke, it produces enough of the white stuff to properly satisfy!

The added bonus with the Yocan Zen is that it’s so much cheaper! While the Zen costs just $39.99 the Utillian 5 will set you back almost three times as much! On top of that the Zen is also much more portable and discreet.

The compact size and light weight made using it on the go a real cinch! I love hiking and getting out in nature and taking the Yocan Zen on a stroll with me was a real game changer!

I was also surprised at the coolness of the vapor. Even when firing on the 3.6V heat setting, the vapor remains cool! This is probably due to the open style airflow which means you can pull a good amount of cool air through to the coil.

Yocan Zen - Performance 2

On the flavor front things get even better! The ceramic and diatomaceous earth coil does an amazing job of extracting those tasty, terpene flavors from your concentrate. I’ve always found the ceramic bowl style coils do a much better job of extracting flavor and the C4-DE coil is no different.

The flavor tails off somewhat on the highest heat setting (3.6V), while the lowest heat setting (2.8V) sacrifices on vapor to product some seriously tasty rips! I found my sweet spot on the medium heat setting (3.2V).

At 3.2V the Yocan Zen produces some surprisingly thick vapor while also delivering those mouth-watering terpenes we all crave! The only thing I would say is the 3.2V and 3.6V settings are much less economical on your concentrate.

I actually found myself using slightly more concentrate with the Yocan Zen compared to some of my go-to favorites like the Utillian 5.

Yocan Zen - Performance 3

Reloading the bowl is also extremely easy given the quick magnetic attachment for the mouthpiece. I was also impressed with the strength of the magnets. Once the mouthpiece is fitted there’s no discernible rattle or movement!

Life expectancy on the coils also seems to be great. I’ve been using the Zen on and off now for about the past month and in that time I’ve only used the one coil. I’ve cleaned the coil using Isopropyl alcohol on a couple of occasions and I’m pretty sure I can squeeze another week or two out of it before it needs discarding.

When it comes to buying replacement coils for the Zen they’re also just as reasonably priced as the device itself. Yocan are currently offering a single C4-DE coil for $8.99, a 5 pack of coils for $24.99 and a 10 pack of coils for $39.99. This makes the C4-DE coil one of the cheaper coil options I’ve come across. Because they’re 510 threaded they can also be used in other compatible vaporizers.

If you’re willing to buy 10 coils at a time you’ll be paying just $3.99 per coil! That’s an insanely cheap price for a replacement coil on your wax vaporizer!

Yocan Zen - Performance 4

The inclusion of variable voltage control also means you can experiment with the type of session you enjoy. The lowest 2.8V setting is perfect for those thinner, runnier extracts and produces super smooth wisps of vapor packed full of flavor.

On the medium 3.2V setting the flavor is only marginally sacrificed. The pay-off is a much more impressive amount of vapor. The hit is also slightly less smooth and produces a much more satisfying throat kick!

With the highest 3.6V setting you’ll get a truly impressive amount of vapor, especially considering the compact size of the device! The throat kick and potency of the hit are also ramped up and it certainly packs enough of a punch to have you spinning!

Yocan Zen - Performance 5

Overall I was incredibly impressed with the performance of the Yocan Zen! Though it’s a small device it still packs enough of a punch to get the job done! Vapor production wasn’t the best I’ve experienced with a wax pen but it still produces enough to satisfy.

Flavor production was personally the standout feature for me and the thing that kept me coming back for more! What surprised me the most was that such a sleek and compact device can deliver such a decent hit!

Yocan Zen | Battery Life & How to Charge

The Yocan Zen comes with a non-removeable 650mAh battery that should give you enough power to enjoy between one and two days of vaping before you need to recharge.

While it’s not the best battery capacity out there it’s clear Yocan made certain sacrifices to maintain a compact and sleek design. Personally I’d prefer having a lighter, more portable device than an extra hour or two of battery life.

Yocan Zen - Battery life and how to charge

Obviously the rate at which you get through the battery also depends on a number of factors like your chosen temperature setting, how hard you like to hit your concentrate and how often you change settings.

When the Zen does run out of battery the LED will flash red 10 times to let you know it’s time to recharge. Simply plug in the provided Type-C USB cable and the LED will light up in a solid red. All told it takes around 1 hour to fully charge, at which time the red LED goes out.

Yocan Zen - Battery life and how to charge 2

Unfortunately there’s no battery level indicator so you’re a bit in the dark with how much battery is left at any given time. With that being said, I quickly got used to how many sessions I could squeeze out of a full charge with my preferred settings. There’s also no pass-through functionality so you can’t use the Zen while it’s charging.

Yocan Zen | Cleaning & Maintenance

As with any concentrates vaporizer, cleaning and ease of maintenance are factors worth considering. I typically prefer vaping dry herb and one of the main reasons is it’s much less hassle in terms of clean up. I’ve had dab pens and E-rigs in the past that perform brilliantly but quickly become gunky after only a couple of sessions.

Luckily the Yocan Zen performs reasonably well in this regard. With frequent, consistent use the C4-DE coil becomes visibly dirty after a few days of use. With heavy vaping I found the coil needs a good clean around the one week mark!

What I really liked though was how well the ceramic coil contains the mess! On other dab pens I’ve owned the concentrate seems to find a way to seep or spit out of the coil and embed itself in the threading and moveable parts.

With the Zen the majority of the mess was contained to the heating chamber. This makes the cleaning and maintenance stage a cinch!

Yocan Zen - Cleaning and Maintenance

Using one of the provided Q-Tips dipped in Isopropyl alcohol (ISO) you can simply work your way around the outside of the coil and gently into the center. After only a couple of minutes the coil looks as good as new!

In cases where the coil needs a thorough clean I’d soak it in a sealable bag with ISO for about 5 minutes. This method works really well to remove any tough grime and restore your coils to their former glory!

After you’ve soaked the coil in ISO just make sure to always rinse it with warm water and leave to fully dry before using again. This can massively increase the lifespan of your coils and save you money in the process!

The device itself also stays relatively clean but I did use the Q-Tip to gently wipe away residue from the inside of the mouthpiece on one occasion.

Yocan Zen | Price & Where to Buy

Obviously one of the best things about the Yocan Zen is the incredibly reasonable price tag! Costing only $39.99, the Zen offers users a wax vaporizer with great performance, for a very budget friendly price.

I’ve tried other wax pens in the past that cost two to three times as much as the Zen, without really offering all that much extra! As it’s a Yocan product you can also expect it to be widely available in online headshops and vape stores and I’m sure there’ll be some generous discounts available, making the Zen even more budget friendly!

Considering the fantastic design and the admirable performance, I’m genuinely shocked the Zen doesn’t cost more! It’s incredibly user-friendly and I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking to get in to dabbing. I’d also recommend it to experienced users looking for a more portable, straightforward device to dab with.

If you are looking to purchase the Zen I’d recommend buying it directly from Yocan. In my experience they give great customer service and also offer free shipping on orders over $50.
